Question about 2006 Buick LaCrosse

1 Answer

I have a 2009 Buick Lacrosse. After a year of driving with no issues, it has a very loud whining noise every time I crank it and never stops until I turn off engine. Does it in drive and park and at all speeds. Very embarrassing! Check power steering fluid level and belt . Fluid full and belt appeared fine. Also, this car has been using oil. The low oil level indicator came on after 2,000 miles after last oil change. Checked it and was 2 qts low. Any suggestions?

The most common source of the whine is the power steering pump is low on fluid or the pump is defective. Check the owner's manual for instructions on how to check the fluid in the pumps reservoir.

SOURCE: Front whine when turning left and at whine when

Whine usually occurs on tight turns maximising pump output and/or pump may be worn and needs replacement. Leakage can be from pump reservor, connection, or power rack and pinion steering assy. Spray off any area with a sign of fluid with a brake clean or carb. cleaner and look for signs of leakage.

SOURCE: Power Steering pump appears to be leaking but is full????

Just guessing. Could it be a warped brake disk? That would cause vibration. And vibration in steering might conceivably cause splashing out the power steering reservoir. You would know if the disk were warped by a shudder when you brake at hight speeds.

The reservoir should be located under the hood on the passenger side, above serpentine belt. Guide your eyes backwards towards the mid section of the engine on the passenger side. the small reservoir will have a small turn cap on top. (passenger side off vehicle)

Hi!!
Take your vehicle to an AutoZone, Checkers or similar auto parts store for a FREE computer trouble codes retrieval, You'll get a print out of the trouble codes their description and possible cause. This way you'll know exactly what's wrong with your vehicle. If you suspect the air or fuel filters are dirty, replace them, it never hurts to change a filter and is part of the engine maintenance.
Good Luck!!
.A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.

    WHIN NOISE

Are you sure it is not the transmission pump or torque converter

No one can guess at noises-need to have the vehicle to check
    that out

Have a dealer weigh in- IF- it is still in warranty

When you say loud & the vehicle is only 3 to 4 years old
I would stop using it in a hurry until that issue is solved

Power steering makes high whining noise I had the fluid changed and it did not help the situation. what is next

Change the power steering pump if it bothers you a lot. Otherwise, if power steering performance is ok, and you only notice a whining noise, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Its probably the power steerinng pump. they do this sometimes when they are cold. has to work a little harder. this is normal. you might check the fliud just to make sure it is full.

Sounds like a combination of a power steering pump (whine) AND the CV axle (loud clunk noise). Check the fluid level in the power steering pump. The pump is located on the passenger's side towards the firewall. Kind of hard to get at but unscrew the cover and there is a small/short dipstick there. See what it reads. Add Power Steering fluid (NOT transmission fluid, as needed. Don't overfill)
I'd get the "thumping noise" taken care of IMMEDIATELY. Could be a serious problem. Qualified front end shop should be able to diagnose and give you an estimate of cost. Last time I had one done it was about $300 parts and labor...

My 2005 Buick LaCrosse makes a whiny noise. It is worse when going around corners. I notice when I take my foot off the gas the noise lessons significantly.

I am guessing the steering rack is starting to go bad. That is quite expensive to fix. The whining noise is the rack sucking air due to the steering fluid has leaked out. You can check your power steering fluid level and add some with stop leak to see if that helps. The filler cap is at the rear of the engine on the passenger side and is quite hard to get to. Be sure to not reach down to remove the cap unless the engine is cool. There is a high risk of burning yourself on the exhaust manifold.
