95 GMC Jimmy. put new battery new alternator with engine running alternator shows 10 with lights off and some times with lights on it goes to 13 while driving the voltage will drop then loose all power and die had alt tested it showed good off the car

not sure what the issue is as a motor, unless you are running all your accesories should run off the battery for abit.

quick test. put a completely charged battery in the vehicle. start it up.... unhook the battery.... if it dies.... alternator.... if it keeps running battery.

well if the alternator is not putting out at least 13 volts when it running most likly its bad i would take it some place and have it checked again

SOURCE: battery test proper voltage, new alternator test

Battery by itself with no cable attach should read 12.4V for low and 13.6V for fully charged.

With both terminal connected a health charging system should read 13.6 to 13.8V

Amp gauge should read positive when chagring and when discharging it should be on the left (negitive side)

Troubleshooting

Key has to be out of the ign.

Charge battery to the max with terminals off the car.

Test voltage and make sure it's between 12.8 to 13.6V

Check the battery CCA and compare it with a battery load tester.
CCA that read 60% below the sticker is a BAD battery.

Cannect the + terminal.

Carefully touch the negitive terminal to the neg. battery post.

Make sure all doors and light are off

You should get a little spark.

A large spare is equal to a large load.

An amp meter will give you a better idea what the drain is.

A short is hard to find and it will take time.

Work on one fuse at a time until you find the load.

What's the voltage reading at the battery with the engine running ? 13 to 14.1 volts ? If not, it's not charging .Sounds to me like it's not charging ! Is there battery voltage at the heavier gage wire on the back of the alternator ? Does the battery symbol light on the dash work ?

2003 Jimmy 4.3 Battery drained down every few days and had to be charged. Today the battery was dead. Replaced it.


check charging rate on new battery with engine running, should be 13.7 +.
if not, check alternator.
if alternator checks out, may be a drain somewhere, light on someplace, etc.

95 GMC Jimmy two wheel dr the battery light will come on during shifting. Volts will go down and lights go dim. After it shifts gear it would go back to normal. Will repeat during shift gears or rpms...


like I see the problem ,the most common is belt not tight enough or alternator or battery
with a voltmeter check the battery voltage more then 13 volts. test battery with a load test

Loss of power& at times stalls Fuel pressure

Jimmy would not start, voltmeter read 9. After jumping battery, engine started but voltmeter did not go above 9. Battery symbol did not light up. Alternator or battery with high resistance?


sounds either like your alternator is bad, if it still goes dead then i would go with the alternator, other wise a cell or two could be bad or shorted in the battery.

Battery light still on after changing alternator and battery.


Did you check the fuses? Are your cables to the battery corroded? Is your ground wire connection clean . Did you get a cheap-*** alternator? Did they check it where you bought it? You may have to have it checked at a napa or other store. Sometimes "reconditioned" means "repainted"
Hey, I've been there. If its a discount store alternator get another place to check it. May save you some grief.

2000 GMC Jimmy won't start


Hi: Have run into same type of problem, turned out to be a dead or very battery. Has nothing to do with the ignitin switch. With a low battery have also had trouble getting the key out of a 95 Jimmy. Boost unit to get running then discommect battery, if unit stall right away replace alternator, if stays running replace battery. If you get the unit runnimg and try to drive it as is you should find lacks power and wants to stall.

Need help with auto wiring ( DON'T KNOW WHERE WIRES GO? )


located the wire coming from batterie light thats very easy you just have to aply groun to one of the 2 wire conector and the alternator light will come on with ignition on, be carrefull the other will have 12 volts, then the big and thick wire goes to the big post on the alternator, and the batterie light wire goes to the remainig small alternator wire, i belive must to be brown color
on alternator but can't remeber, good luck
