No it is not a bad thing unless it exceeds the spec for it in the factory overhaul book.

David, If you feel the vibration in the seat and not the steering wheel, this means the vibration is coming from rear of car, may be a bad rear tire.

Can a bad deferential cause steering issue on 2002 envoy

I am assuming your mechanic was refering to the front differential and your vehicle is 4x4. If the vehicle is in 4x4 all the time you may notice a " hopping " feeling on corners from the front wheels. Otherwise, the differential should not cause steering issues. What type of problem is the vehicle experiencing that concerns you and would lead your mechanic to assess a bad diff?

When truck is traveling in a straight-ahead direction, which of the gear rotate

Oh Dang a test.. Whoo hoo. So first there is only one pinion in a differential. So A,B,C is irrelevant. By your questions. But lets look at the questions. A- the pinion turns the ring gear, so it doesn't turn any spider gears.. B- the pinion doesn't come in contact with the shaft. If your talking about the axle. Or any other part, except the ring gear. C- The side gears have to turn, or you have NO movement, Forward or reverse. D- Look at C. So the answer would be D. But look to me for an ASE test answer. I could be wrong. I just look at the problem and fix it. I'm not really a mechanic... I just fix things.

How do i check allowable movement in rear drive shaft differential on a 2005 chevy equinox

There is no "cheking"to be done other than what you have done already. The movement,ANY movement, only means the universal joint is shot and needs replaced.I'm sure you've noticed a steady vibration. It's coming from bad U-joint.Replace it.

Check into the warranty of any of those parts.
Tell him you want the old parts.
Get a different mechanic and sue him or forget the old one.
He's useless.

well you should do a diagnostic code check. although a code read will not show things like , bad air filter causing motor to mis fire, it will not detect a bad intake gasket, it will not detect a bind or bad chain gear in trans or axles. but it will give you a better understanding with the motor condition and then you can start eliminating causes till you get to the problem. I wish the best to you
