Sprag is defined as a pole or bar hinged to the rear axle of a cart or the like in such a way that it can brace the vehicle against a road to prevent it from rolling downhill.

Why won't it shift into drive or overdrive?

Joshua, Have transmission scanned for trouble codes, check fluid level and top up if needed, maybe shift solenoid, sprag in transmission,etc.. Have a good technician diagnose and estimate repair.

2003 suburban...transmission will not go into 3rd gear...the filter, perhaps?

Yes and no to fix it you have a failed foward sprag. There is a high number of complaint with the 4l60e and 4l70e and you have one of these the transmission will not go in gear in drive and in 3rd so you have a failed sprag or foward clutch here the fix the foward sprag gear it has a high damage complaint. You will need a overhaul you can try the transmission filter the main problem reside in the pressure control unit and since you will relace the filter you can perform one more step and access the pressure control and remove the debriss in there (use brake cleaner the one in the spray can)

After changing transmittion filter and refilling fluids; during test drive no power in drive, I can walk the gears and get momentum but in drive car doesn't move.

The forward sprag in the transmission is broken time for a rebuild or new. a sprag is a $40.00 part but you have to use a rebuild pack with gasket so you should rebuild anyways.

I have an 06 navigator and the trans makes noise? allready change the torke converter and is making the same noise.

Lots of things make noise but the front sprag has a bullitin on it and it's covered under the 7=70 powertrain warrentee. The whole trans really needs replaced as the medel goes though everthing and the rebuilt units are reworked with the updated sprag and the old unit won't take the new sprag ( IT'S BIGGER). Sorry but this is an expensive repair the dealers are doing alot of them.

96 sonoma that doesnt want to move i have to rev the engine to get it to move a little it in forward and reverse is it the clutch

If it is an automatic it sounds like a sprag gear or more than likely the hydraulic governor. Some of your more friendly transmission shops will sell you a governor for about $20. If it's your sprag gear you might as well have the transmission rebuilt.

If it's a standard, sounds like it may be your pressure plate may be shot.

Only reverse works. No foward gears.

No forward movement in OD or D, but L2, L1 and R work: Forward sprag is broken. R&R. Try not to run or drive the car or further damage could result.

Do you have manual 1st? If so, can you shift through the gears...i.e. manual 1st to manual 2nd then 'D' then 'OD'??? Only 1st and 2nd gears use the forward sprag unless the LO/Rev clutch is engaged...i.e. 1st and 2nd if in "drive". If you can shift threw the gears manually then, yes, your forward sprag broke.

If no manual 1st then your sprag is not what broke. Sounds like you blew up the rear planet. If you pull the pan and find chunks of iron and steel, then that is probably what happened. If you have reverse then it is not the pump. If the pump was bad you would have no line pressure and it would slip in rev. or no rev. Not the beef sun shell either because you have rev., a broken sun shell would cause no 2nd, 4th and rev. gears. Either way the trans needs to come out and torn down and it will be easily found what went. Good luck and thank you for using Fixya.
