How do I change the thermostat on my 1993 Toyota Corolla DX

My car is over heating. The manual I have doesn't give specific enough directions for changing the thermostat. Help.

It's not in the upper hose but the one just below the distributor. I'm wondering myself if the distributor has to come off to get to it....... I was just at Advance who showed me where it was at, but not sure on installation. Mines a 94 dx with 1.8, but assume it's the same thermostat

Follow your upper rad hose to where it connects to your upper of part of your engine. It should be be easy to spot the expanded housing that the hose goes to. it's in this housing. Hope that helped.

check the waterhoses for heat, touch them once the engine is at operating temperature. If one of them is cold against the other, you waterpump needs to be replaced.

How many quarts of oil does a Corolla Dx hold at oil change?

4 quarts, 5 with filter change according to the book. Rule of thumb, buy 5 and once you drain and replace the filter, start by putting 3 and a half quarts in and check the level. If it's between the marks start the motor and run for 5 minutes then let it sit for 5 minutes and recheck the level. Top off half a quart at a time till you get the oil level between the full and add marks.

Thermostat location

The thermostat is located directly under the distributor cap, on the end of the cylinder head. Easy to remove/replace. Drain the coolant, remove the 2 nuts that holds the housing on, and remove it. The thermostat stays in the cyl head, just pull it out. Note that the "Wiggle-Valve" must be placed at the 12 oclock/straight up position. Hope this helps, in lieu of a picture.

Have your checked your coils? Never replace parts to try and fix a problem, Find the exact problem and fix it! No spart would be either a bad cam/crank sensor, bad coil pack or ecm fuse!
