I will try to help. Several things about some starters, I remember there were some which had shims needed for the (starter to block) mounting bolts. Seems like a certain clearance was needed for proper mesh of starter gear to ring gear.

If ring gear was replaced, was there a difference in the number of teeth on the ring gear? Your starter drive needs to match if there was a difference. Either way you need compatibile spacing.

Overadvanced motor. Fighting compression will strain the starter. Now there were some heavy duty starters for big Cadillac motor. But these starters would also mount on a Buick 350. If you have higher compression these heavy duty starters would be a good choice.

SOURCE: starter wont connect with flex plate on big block

You'll need a starter from a 1993 C2500 Suburban which came with a 454. Assuming you're running a TH400 this should solve your issues.

2000 Cadillac sts starter stays engaged with the key in the run position.

sounds like the solenoid is engaged throwing the bendix into the flex plate and allowing current into the starter motor, things to check 1 make sure the bendix is not sticking holding on the solenoid , the solenoid lets more power flow to the starter from the battery. 2 faulty solenoid, 3) faulty ignition switch... hope that helps

When trying to start my car its making a whinning noise and wont crank what could it be?

If the starter is spinning and not engaging the flywheel to start the car, suspect a defective starter drive clutch and starter replacement will be required

Starter staying engaged and running with key off

This is usually due to one of two things:

  1. The solenoid spring in the starter is broken, not retracting the starter gear when the key is released.
  2. The starter gear is binding in the flywheel (flex plate) and not releasing after releasing the key.

Stater spins but engine doesn' t turn over

Bummer. This is typically one of two things: starter drive, or teeth missing on the flywheel.
Of course, something can be cracked or loose, but surgery is the next step.

1990 zx10 starter just spins does not engage the motor to turn over how do I fix it I've already replace with a new starter...same issues...

the solenoid is not moving the pinion gear forward to engage in the flywheel so check that you have connected the wire from the starter switch correctly. Next point to check --if this is an auto matic vehicle ,check that the flex plate has not broken away and not in the position for the pinion gear to engage ti.

If you had a broken flex plate chances are the starter drive gear is no good as well, replace it.

The starter seems to be engaging, even without the key in. I just replaced the starter with a new one about a month ago. I disconnected the battery to stop it. if I try to reconnect the battery it sparks...

Try the starter solenoid, the contacts may be welded in it. I am not sure if the Ford Ranger has a starter relay also in the fuse box. If the starter solenoid is good then it could be the starter relay has contacts welded. Please rate my answer so I am rewarded points for it.

97 Ford Power Stroke, starting problem.

Does the starter engage the drive gear with the action of a solenoid? It may not be pushing (pulling) the gear far enough. There may be a slipping ring gear on the flex-plate. If you pull the starter again, you can try to see if the ring moves in and out or appears to be slipping around on the flex-plate. The flex plate could be loose on the crankshaft. In any case, the engine or the transmission would have to come out. Check the starter engagement before removing the torus and flex-plate.
