Sounds like you need to either replace or clean the battery terminals. they are making just enough connection to work the lights but the load of turning on the key makes it lose what connection it has

Key wont turn or release the steering wheel

I'm not familiar with the Mercedes, but first of all, NEVER turn your wheels all the way, it'll cause damage sooner or later, you kind of found this out already. Next, try getting to the fuse center under the dash and probably under the hood of the car, check all your fuses with a digital volt meter, replace any that are bad.

Your last statement is "won't start" does the engine spin? or nothing at all happens when you turn the key? If your sure the battery connections are all tight and clean the next step I would do is plug an OBD II scanner in and get any codes that have popped up in your computer, if there aren't any, then my next suggestion would be to start checking into the ignition system, If you forced you key to turn in anyway when you had your wheels locked to the side, you could have damaged the electro-mechanical components in the steering column.

Usually turning the wheel one way or the other and holding it tight while trying the key works. Does the ignition turn?
You could try to jump the starter relay, if it is old style, visible round thing with two big wires from the battery and two little wires. Make sure the car is in park or neutral.

Are we talking about the engine does not crank, or does not start ??
If the engine will not crank and the key lock is not working right, it could be the linkage in the steering column or the lock cylinder.

IGNITION AND STEERING LOCKED!

Try pressing the key down little bit while you are trying to turn it towards ignition, at the same time slowly turning the steering wheel clockwise and counter clockwise ( it's locked but it still moves a little bit), it should release the steering wheel lock. hope it helps
p.s please rate the answer if you found it helpful, i need it for my ratings, thanks!

The ignition key and lock cylinder operate a gear and lever type of mechanism within the steering column. If the gear jumps out by one tooth, or has been assembled incorrectly, it will cause the steering wheel to remain locked and the push rod that activates the ignition switch (located near the bottom of the column) will not function correctly. This can be very tricky to solve, and should be serviced by an experienced technician.
