SOURCE: gear shift lever moves but
The shift solenoid is stuck. The lever is moving, but its not making the gears to shift.First check the shift solenoid, if its stuck / worn out cracked. It has to be replaced. Also check the brake light switch.
The brake light switch has alot to do with being able to shift from park since the sensor sends a signal telling the system that the brake pedal is being pressed and to allow you to shift from park. --
There is a small cable attached to the ignition switch that unblocks the gear shift. When this cable gets loose or broken it does not unblock the gear shift, causing it to get stuck.---
Checkout, this should help.Keep updated.Thanks.Helpmech.

there is a linkage inside the transmission that came off or lose so you might have to take it to a mechanic to get in there and repair so do not start car no more and you might have to have the car towed to a mechanic to look at it.

Thank you for contacting FixYa with your inquiry.
I had the same problem. There was a recall in which installed an electric solenoid interlock preventing starts unless the brake was depressed. In our case the solenoid failed and had to be replaced. Prior to getting the solenoid replaced we would start the engine in neutral defeating the safety. (Not a good idea)
Yours probably has the factory electric shift interlock. When you step on the brake,
it turns on a solenoid that unlocks the shifter. If the switch or solenoid
go bad, you will not be able to shift out of park. The solenoid usually has linkage to the brake pedal and that would explain why on occasion you could depress the brake pedal to the floor and over extend the reach of the linkage releasing the shift mechanism.
Please advise if we can be of further service.

SOURCE: Brake lights won't come on
check for a bad brake light fuse! if not the fuse, the brake light switch operates brake lights and if bad you will not be able to shift it out of park, as well as the brake lights not coming on.! because you have to put foot on brake to do so. if bad switch, it wont let it out of park. it could be just out of adjustment also!! good-day !
