Just use a small funnel. And make sure your vehicle is running, and you have cycled through all your gears. Check in park while idling. Add little amounts at a time!!

SOURCE: the transmission was having trouble shifting so I

check for any check engine lights if not you should have the cars transmission module checked for code these cars have problem with pressure control solenoid and torque converter clutch solenoid and the wiring harness swells from overheat inside the transmission side cover in the valve body. it usually sets a p1870 transmission may need to replace the PC solenoid,TCC solenoid, and wiring harness. It could also be the valve body itself the solenoid wear the valve body. Valve body will usually come with all solenoids but make sure at least you use brand new PC solenoid,TCC solenoid, and wiring harness.

Transmission whines when cold and shifts on the edge

Sounds like it maybe slipping, try checking the transmission fluid level and add as necessary to full mark of near full mark, which is in the operating range, could do what I did with my windstar minivan, add in the Lucas Transmission Fix, for your Ford Taurus you'll need Mercon ATF ( Automatic Transmission Fluid ) unless its a manual transmission or differently specified which then will need different fluid, check the owners manual, repair manual or phone Ford and ask them for transmission fluid type. Keep in mind that the wrong fluid type in transmission and or wrong amounts ( overfilled ) or ( underfilled ) can affect the transmission's proper operation.

Also check your coolant, when coolant level is low the light will come on the dash cluster and add as needed, Fords usually use the green coolant, green colored coolant or could use the universal type coolant. Check the owners manual, look in a repair manual or ask Ford technician for the coolant type.

Transmission slips all the time... is the transmission goin out?

I assume you have an automatic transmission; most of the time when people with manual transmissions get slippage, they start moaning about a bad clutch.

If the transmission fluid is clean and at the proper level, and the filter screen is not clogged, then you have a bad torque converter seal or a problem with the transmission itself.

Check the fluid first. If it is low, add fluid according to the directions in the owner's manual, put some disposable paper or cardboard under the vehicle, run the transmission through each gear, then check the paper or cardboard for drip marks indicating a leak. If the fluid is dirty, has metallic particles in it, or smells burned, it's time to talk to a transmission overhaul shop.

How much tranamission fluid does my 1997 sable hold

If you have your owners manual, there is a section containing the capacities for all fluids. You may also simply check your fluid level, with a running motor and warm transmission. If the stick indicates add, start with a 1/4 quart and work your way up. Unless there is a problem with the trans, there is no real reason to ever add fluid unless your are flushing the transmission.

TO DO A TRANSMISSION FLUID CHANGE YOU NEED HAVE TRANSMISSION FLUID ON HAND YOU NEED TRANSMISSION FILTER AND GASKET.YOU NEED 3/8 WRENCH THE RATCHET TYPE WITH METRIC SOCKETS. YOU NEED JACK TO RAISE VECHICLE SUPPORT VECHICLE ON JACK STANDS.YOU NEED A DRAIN PAN. ONCE YOU GET VECHICLE OFF GROUND.PLACE DRAIN PAN UNDER TRANSMISSION OIL PAN REMOVE OIL PAN DRAIN BOLT.LET FLUID DRAIN OUT IN DRAIN PAN THEN SCREW DRAIN PLUG BACK IN PLACE DONT OVER TIGHTEN.REMOVE OIL PAN AND GASKET. BESURE TO HAVE PAPER TOWEL ON HAND.MAKE SURE TRANSMISSION OIL PAN GASKET SURFACE CLEAN BEFORE INSTALLING NEW PAN GASKET. ONCE TRANSMISSION OIL PAN REMOVED. REMOVE THE OLD TRANSMISSION FILTER INSTALL THE NEW FILTER.THEN WITH NEW GASKET ON OIL PAN IN PLACE.OIL PAN NEED TO BE CLEAN SO THE GASKET ADHESIVE WILL HOLD PAN GASKET IN PLACE WHILE INSTALLING PAN AND GASKET TO TRANSMISSION.INSTALL OIL PAN BOLTS INSTALL THEM CRISS CROSS TORQUE PAN BOLTS TO 7 TO 10 FT LBS. LOOK IN OWNERS MANUAL FOR TRANSMISSION FLUID CAPACITY.BUY 10 QUARTS .TO BE ON SAFE SIDE SO YOU WILL HAVE ENOUGH FLUID ON HAND. IF YOU DONT HAVE NO TRANSMISSION FLUID CAPACITY. ADD 7.5 QUARTS FLUID.WAIT FOR 2 MINUTES.CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL ON DIP STICK. SHOULD BE ON THE FULL MARK.CRANK VECHICLE UP.LET IDLE FEW MINUTES CHECK TRANSMISSION DIP FLUID LEVEL IF DROPPED ADD LITTLE MORE.WHILE ENGINE IDLING GETTING WARM UP. KEEP EYE ON FLUID LEVEL.WHEN FLUID LEVEL STOP DROPPING. APPLY BRAKES HOLD FOOT ON BRAKES SHIFT THROUGH ALL GEARS TWO TIMES. Im leaking transmission fluid and i dont think i have coverage to repair it

Generally the trans pan is first to leak on any transmission. If the perimeter of the pan espeacially the mounting bolts are wet with red fluid change the filter and gasket. Add transmission fluid as recommended in the owners manual also
If the leak is between the engine and the trans the front pump seal or pump seals need replacement.
If leaking at the axle shafts the axle seals need replacing

How much transmission fluid do I put in my 2003 alero. I am changing the filter and gasket.

IT WILL TAKE 7 QUARTS FOR FLUID CHANGE.YOU NEED TO USE FACTORY GASKET.BECAUSE THE GASKET THAT COME WITH FILTER WILL LEAK.I HAD THAT PROBLEM.YOU CAN REUSE THE OLD GASKET.ITS THICK RUBBER GASKET WITH HOLDING HOLDING TABS THAT HOLD IT IN PLACE.IF GASKET LOOKS DAMAGED OR BAD ITS BEST TO BUY IT AT DEALERS SHIP.IT COST ABOUT $40.00 DOLLARS.THE GASKET THAT COME IN FILTER KIT IT TOO THIN.IT PLAIN.IT DONT HAVE SEALING BEADS IN IT.WHEN YOU PUT IT ON ADD FLUID TRANSMISSION WILL LEAK THROUGH THE GASKET.LOOK AT THE OLD GASKET LOOK AT THE DOUBLE SEAL BEAD IT HAS IT KEEP IT FROM LEAKING.

If you have no leaks dont worry about it. Just get it serviced if its time. Alot of cars are this way now. You need to be under the car to drain and fill. My BMW is this way

Adding Transmission Fluid

Get a funnel and pour in the transmission fluid where the transmission oil dipstick is. The plastic container with the yellow cap is probably your radiator fluid (engine coolant)

Leaking fluid

Unfourtinately the transmission you have is an unservicable transmission. The only way to have the tranny fixed is to have it rebuilt or replaced. I regret to inform you of the bad news.
