I have a 1997 bmw 316i MT, the gear knob is stuck at reverse. It won't come off.

Shifting the knob to reverse is fine, but i cannot unshift the knob from the reverse position unless i turn off the engine. the shifting in other gears is fine.

Sounds like a bad motor mount, pop the hood and see if the motor shakes or moves rapidly when u put it in gear holding down the brake.

SOURCE: gear knob removal bmw 318 ci

It's very simple. Involves a bit of fore arm strenght.
It should pull straight off. Just put one hand around the gear knob & your other hand supporting or gripping with both.
Just pull straight up. It shouldn't need much force. A small amount of glue may have been used to help hold it in place.
The knob might come off leaving the plastic sleeve/insert in the shifter. Same again, just grip that & try pull it off. A vice grips should not be neccessary but if you need it be carefull not to apply too much pressure as you don't want to break the sleeve into pieces.
The new knob should have a sleeve with it. Normally it will be inserted & you should be able to just pop it straight on.
Make sure it's lined up properly. You probably noticed on the bare metal shifter that it has a notch normally running across from left to right. Well inside the knob if you can see in you will notice it has a plastic or metal piece that will fit into this notch. This is to stop the knob from spinning around or slipping!
Just push down on the top of the knob & try slide it over the shifter. It might not go down all the way with pushing so a few taps with you palm may be enough if you have big strong hands but if not be carefull & only use a rubber head hammer or something you can hold but won't mark or break the knob.
Put a towel or old t-shirt over the knob & use anythink heavy that you can hold easily with one hand & that has no sharp edges!
I don't think any glue should be neccessary but if you feel it needs a little & the knob is comming off or going on too easy then just a few drops on the sides of the bare metal shifter before sliding the knob back on should suffice!
Good luck!

SOURCE: BMW E38 735i no reverse gear..????

Before you make any other moves, I would try having the transmission flushed and refilled and filters changed and if that doesn't work, you may have burned out the modulator so you may have to shop around for another transmission or have that one rebuilt, whichever would be feasibly financial for you.

SOURCE: removing and fitting a new gear knob bmw e46 318i man trans

Hi joserosa if this is a manual gearbox you just have to grip the gear knob and pull upwards until the gear knob is removed, the same principle is applied for a auto box but hold in the release button while removing, regards Mark.

check if the water is circulating as you might have a blockage in the header tank. this can be checked by opening the radiator cap and check if the water is circulating on top.

Could be, or the clutch disc. First gear and reverse do not have syncro gears, the others do. So the transmission and engine have to be "disconnected" to allow shifting into first and reverse.

For car not changing gears and not shifting out of park mode ,it can be shifter assembly issue, or it can also be transmission issue. Get the shifter assembly inspected with ignition OFF.

For more troubleshooting, I suggest you to get the Following help link checked, its complete step by step procedure to inspect gear shift issues: -----

Take out your middle console and watch your shift cables as your shifting, you may have something stuck or maybe your shift cable bushing has broken. So i would just take the console out, and try shifting in all your gears. And then you will most likely find out what your problem is. :)) Good luck. Hope this helps. I have a saturn too and I LOVE IT!!! Good choice of a car!!! James Booth

The gear shift gets stuck and won't shift into other gears. Will put it reverse and then try to put in drive and it gets stuck in reverse.

Either the shift knob or the actuator rod under the shift knob has worn out.
Remove the shift knob and pull the actuator rod (plastic) out of the shift lever and inspect it for wear or damage. If the rod is not worn or damaged, replace the shift knob and you will be good to go.
Good luck.
