My Automatic Renault Truck 420 DCI premium gear lever seems not to be recognized and therefore isnt changing the gears......please help

The truck engages gear 2 level when it attains the required pressure levels and drops to Neutral when the pressure goes down. the gear lever seems not to be communicating with the astronic gearbox

The following are the general instructions on the start of diagnosing any electronically controlled engine or transmission problem.

The engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM or ECM,ECU), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems. Also engine mechanical problems can and do cause many drive-ability related problem such as rough idle and other symptoms.

1st thing to do is test the system for codes, the problem is most likely a failed or stuck shift solenoid indside the trans, have you ever serviced the trans, sometimes a fluid and filter cahnge will cure these kinds of issues.

if the fluid is full then the only thing it can be is either the trans range selector switch, the trans computer or a mechanical failure in the trans, u will need the system tested for any stored trouble codes.

hi from uk could you please give a little more info ? what make/model car ? has this problem occured suddenly? has car been layed up off road some time prior to this unable to select gears ? this problem sounds very much like the clutch drive plate is either stuck to flywheel hence question above ? or it is sticking on primary/spigot shaft for some reason and failing to disengage drive to g/box? how does clutch pedal feel ? you might try selecting 2nd gear with clutch fully pressed and h/brake on then try starting engine if engine starts ?runs then put slight revs on and slip clutch a few times this may work if plate is sticking? if you come back with update may be able to advise further

Auto transmission wont go into gear

Start with checking the fluid level. Make sure to follow the owner's manual instructions. Some cars require the engine to be running and in a neutral. If the level is correct see if it will go into another gear. Check the linkage/ cable to make sure it is actually functioning and shifting the transmission.

Unfortunately with automatic transmission your options are limited.

My 1997 Chevy Cavalier automatic transmission is stuck in neutral and the shifter just glides from park, won't engage in any gears.

If the shift handle moves extremely freely (more than normal), changes are that the shift cable has become disconnected from the shift lever. This would explain the indicator not moving out of neutral.
You will need to access the shift lever by removing the console cover. Once you access the shifter check the cable connection to the level. If the cable is broken, it will need replacement. If the cable clip has broken or fallen off, it will need to be reattached.

Have a 94 aerostar the trans engages all gears (** the motor dies down when it goes in gear**) but no matter how much gas I give it it does not move any ssuggestions? ???

Is pump working? ATF level? Check ATF level and if low top up. Next check the oil pressure. If getting no pressure check filter for clogging and if fine replace pump/tranny.

Hi there,

The Check Engine light is primarily for faults relating to the engine emission circuits.

The condition you have described above means you have transmission "slippage" in the 4th gear / overdrive circuit. This can be caused by many factors.

Changing trans fluid is always the first step, but...

1) Use ONLY FORD approved trasmission fluids (specifically for your Mercury) - do not use any other brand/type, unless specified.
2) Fluid level MUST be checked correctly - while idling, move lever through all gears, resting lever in Neutral, then checking level.
3) NEVER overfill the trans above required level - this could cause the same symptoms as underfilling (foaming etc)

Your vehicle should be checked for diagnostic codes from the Trasmission Control Module (TCM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM). I'm confident one or more codes (between P0700 - P0999) will be stored in memory, allowing you to identify the suspected circuit.

Until this diagnostic check has been performed (will only take 15mins by an experiences Ford technician), you should not attempt to replace any further parts.

Check the gear box oil level....I'm thinking that you have a auto box....this should be done on level ground and with the engine running at idle speed....To check level correctly place your foot onto the brake hard and also select the parking brake....With the engine running, move the selector lever from park into reverse and then to neutral then to 'D', followed by the lower range gears and then moving up to 'D', and then to neutral again and then to reverse and back to neutral....Leave each position engaged for about one second....Leaving the engine running and the park brake engaged check that the gear box oil is at the correct level....It should be between the marks indicated on the red topped dip stick....When filling with Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) through the same tube where dip stick is located the engine should also be running and care taken not to over fill....Once at the correct level the vehicle should behave normally.

The weld on the manual lever is known to break loose. First, with the wheels off the ground, with the lever in the park position, does the drive shaft lock in park? If yes or no sometimes, drop the trans pan. I bet the nut on the lever camd loose.

Transmission stuck in neutral (automatic) won't engage drive or reverse

first i would check the transmission oil, do this by starting the engine and leave it running, select all the gears (park, Reverse, neutral etc) then put it back to neutral, leave engine running then locate the transmission dipstick in the engine bay, remove and wipe the dipstick, replace then pull out again, if the oil is showing between the cold and hot marks then level is ok. I shoing lower or none, top up the oil level with automatic tansmission oil, keep rechecking the oil level as adding oil as to ensure it is not over full. will need to select all gears again before checking oil level again.
If the oil level is correct than quite likley a Transmission failure will require mechanic.

Gear 1 and reverse gear can no longer be engaged in my Audi A4 2002 1.8T Manual. On gear 3, the gear lever is very loose as though in neutral position, any help out there?

Thanks I got the solution it was fixed this morning. One of the gear links was loose and out of place just at the gearbox level
