If coolant is not circulating there is either a blockage in the line somewhere or most likely you will have to replace the thermostat.

SOURCE: 2001 BMW 740iL is sputtering when I accelarate and shaky when idl

A tune-up and throttle body clean-up is a good idea, but mind you on those cars, the valve covers usually leak into the spark plugs and coils, causing the car to misfire. If you are replacing the plugs and find them soaked in oil; replace your valve cover gaskets or you will be back to the same problem soon after the oil soaks the new plugs back up again.

SOURCE: I need to change the oil on my 94 BMW 740IL.

Depends how competent you are here and what sort of tools you have. You will also need to replace oil filter if you wish to replace oil within the engine. The oil has to be drained from underneath the engine and allow it to sit for few hours while draining as this will ensure all the deposits at the bottom comes off.

How do I find the wiper relay on my 1997 BMW 740il. I ordered a factory wiper relay .its Tan in color, I cant find it. I need help from a professional can you help me.

It's located inside the power distribution panel.

The power distribution panel on your car is located under the hood in the engine compartment. It is located on the right passenger side closest to the firewall.

When you open the cover to the PDP, you'll see a series of blade type fuses in the front compartment and a bunch of wire harnesses in the back- that's where you'll find the tan colored relay you need to replace.

I have attached a youtube video for you to watch because it appears that the most common cause of this relay failure is due to water build up in the PDP compartment which is causing serious wiring deterioration and rusting- not only to the wiper relay but to the other relay components in that block.

So should you be experiencing the same problem when you open the power distribution panel, you'll know what to do.

probably a hose, take it to a mechanic and ask if you can get it pressure tested. They will put a cap on your radiator and pump air through it and the water with run through and leak where there is a problem

Make sure you have the right amount of coolant in the vehicle. Make sure your fans are running correctly. If they are not running, check the fuse. If all this checks out, it may be a bad thermostat.

I am not aying that this is what I think it is but I found this on your year BMW

Some BMW, Volkswagen and Audi cars have a common problem that the water pump impeller becomes dislodged from the input shaft of the water pump leaving the water pump looking ok from the outside, but failed on the inside. If your car experiences this problem it will over heat rapidly much like a thermostat failure. For exact specific repair procedures for this repair visit our online repair manual page.

Failed BMW, VW, Audi Water Pump Troubleshooting Procedure
  • Check Water Pump Operation - To troubleshoot this problem first drain about a half a gallon out of the cooling system, next remove the thermostat from the engine. With the thermostat out start the engine (stand back) coolant should be forced out of the thermostat port, if not the impeller has dislodged itself from the water pump input shaft and needs to be replaced. To replace the water pump finish draining the remainder of engine coolant, remove the serpentine belt and coolant hoses. Next remove the water pump mounting bolts and remove the water pump. Clean gasket surfaces and reinstall new water pump and reassemble. Refill with coolant and recheck system, top off engine coolant after it has re-cooled.

My bmw is overheating

first, check coolant level and make sure you have enough coolant to water ratio. if you pop the cap off the radiator and see alot of rust, you might want to flush the system. another thing, with the motor cool and the cap off the rad. start the car. watch for signs that its being circulated{swirls around}. if it dont, the water pump could be bad, or the thermostat is stuck closed and in need of replacement

check coolant level, might be a leak. most bmws have a water pump that uses a plastic impeller/propeller (dont know the technical name), but it breaks off the water pump shaft, and no coolant is circulated through the engine and radiator
