Question about 1990 Ford F150

1 Answer

90 f150 5.0 has issues

When i start the truck the check engine light comes on immediately. the truck runs rough until it comes up to temp. and check engine light stays on. once i start to drive the truck above approx. 15 mph or so the check engine light goes out, BUT the truck has no power and when it shifts into OD the torque converter never locks up so it runs approx. 2000 - 2100 rpm at 55 mph. needless to say i am only getting 8 mpg at the best. any ideas?

    hey fordtech,

the truck only runs a little tough when first started but after it has been warmed ( 5 mins. tops) it runs smooth, just no power and drinks fuel. is the torque converter no locking up in OD related to the same problem? i really don't want to rack up a huge bill, i am laid off work and living on an unemployment check. will a shop scan it and tell what needs replaced so i can fix it myself?

If your check engine light is on, you will need to have it tested to see what codes have been stored. The light will stay on until it has been tested and codes cleared. Disconneting the battery for five minutes will also reset the light, but if the truck is running rough, you don't want to run it like that. It could cause severe damage to the engine. Best bet is to get it tested and correct the underlying problem before it costs you big bucks. Good Luck

That would be the best bet. Get it scanned and you get a better idea of what you are dealing with.

2007 Aveo leaking coolant from around the entire engine where the top is bolted down. Iost a lot fluid but the temp gauge doesn't ever go above half way so I'm not sure if there's an issue there also

check your hose's for small pin leak's. also check your thermostat housing and gasket. might be leaking from housing. might need a tune up if running rough. does your check engine light come on when car is running.

Why does my car get to its normal temp and cut off?

Does it immediately restart or is there an extended crank to start it back up? Is the check engine light on? If so, have the codes scanned to see if any problem areas have been found by the computer. A cold engine requires more fuel and as the engine warms up, fuel is trimmed back/reduced by the computer. You may have a vacuum leak causing the stall/dirty throttle plate/ or it could even be an electrical issue to/from a sensor

My engine just started running rough and there's a really strong sulfur smell coming from the exhaust

Could need a tuneup. The unburned gas in the exhaust is damaging the catalytic convertor (expensive). Could be a weak spark issue or a stuck fuel injector. Have it looked after immediately or the cost for repair will increase! If the "check engine" light is on, have the engine computer scanned. That should indicate the source of the problm. Most any auto parts store will scan it for you for free.

Running rough

A blinking or flashing check engine light indicate misfiring. I suggest you check the components of your secondary ignition system especially if it worsens when it's damp.

Intermittent check engine light, runs rough

You have 2 codes, 8 and 5, code 8 is the TDC sensor, this would cause a no start, the code 5 is for the MAP sensor, it may be disconnected or defective.
