The shift interlock has malfunctioned....here is a way to get it to the dealer without having to have it towed. remove the shroud around the shifter assembly...there are 2 screws at the front of it you will need to remove. once you have the shround removed you will see 2 cables the one closest the drivers side is theinterlock cable. start the vehicle hold your foot on the brake... now follow the cable back til you find where it connects...push where it connects rearward as you shift the vehicle into gear...

It is the cable that connects the shifter to the linkage in the trans could be stretched or the isolation clips could have broken

Auto trans will shift some times and manual only

It may be just the vehicle speed sensor. Does the speedometer work OK? The vehicle speed sensor tells the computer how to control the shifting and it also sends a signal to the speedometer. Is the trany full of fluid, is it fairly clean? It should be red. Most vehicles, you check the fluid with the engine idling, in park.

Can I tow my 4X4 auto grand cherokee behind a Mtr Hm? I will put everything in N (transfer case & Trany)

I have a jeep wrangler and to have it towed you are suppose to put the transverecase in neutral after you first depress brake pedal put trans in neutral then start engine shift auto trans into drive release brake pedal make sure there is no movement, shut engine off with key left in acc position shift auto trans into park, disconnect neg battery cable (damage can result in trans if shifted into park while transvere case is in neutral with engine running) you should refere to your owners manuel

2002 jeep wrangler 4.0 auto will not start, maybe shift sensor??

Neutral safety switch is either bad or out of adjustment. On stickshift cars, usually found above clutch pedal. On automatics, aw4 trans is on passenger side of trans, On 727 Chrysler trans it's on the top left rear edge of trans casting just above the pan.
