Typically an alternator is an easy fix. It requires removal of the belt from the engine running it, and a few bolts that attach it to the engine.

Because of the engineering with the 2000 mpv, it is a very difficult fix, and one that requires removal of the transaxle and exhaust manifold, as well as removal of the lower engine mounts. It will take a qualified Mazda mechanic 3.5 hours to do the fix - you can (at least) triple that amount of time as a DIY project (assuming you have the right tools).

You do not have to remove mounts or exhaust, just transaxle and altenator bracket...

It's not difficult to replace the alternator on the 2000 MPV. The sure sign of a problem with the alternator is that your battery is not charging. When my alternator died (not knowing it was the problem), I pulled over to a Walmart, bought a set of $3 wrenches and a replacement battery. When the new battery started to die, I pulled over to an Autozone and purchased an alternator. My car barely made it to my girl friend's house where I replaced it on her driveway. If you are comfortable handling replacing car batteries and using a socket wrench (make sure you have a metric set), then it's not hard. Just do it!

It is not a very difficult task, but one that would be better left to a professional for a couple of reasons. First, the system should be tested to be sure this is going to fix your problem. Many times a bad battery is the demon. Second, you will get a warranty with that repair if you have it done at a reputable garage/dealership. Just a couple of things to think about.

I have a Mazda MPV 2000. Apparently the alternator is bad and the mechanic is going to charge me $581.00. How hard is it to replace. In looking at it, it looks like it may be really hard to get at.

I have a 1996 Mazda Protege. 3 years ago the alternator seized up
and what a job that was! The cost of a rebuilt alternator was a bit
over $200.00. The spaces are so damn tight it took me over 2 hours to get the old one out and 1 and 1/2 hours to get the new one in. And this was working with the car on ramps. I miss the old days when I could change the belt and alternator on 75 Chevy
Impala in 15 or 20 minutes!

if the altenator and battery check good. i'd say you have a draw on the battery. can be very hard to find at times.

I own a 2000 mazda mpv, battery light was on and a changed an alternator and light is still on and not charging my battery. What could be the cause?

you probably got a defective alternator...this happens more than it should...perform alternator output test at 2000 rpm you should make 13.6 volts and up to 100 amps of power under load.

try to boost it with a good battery. if it starts,
replace the battery. watch your connections. don't reverse the booster cables.

Replacing neutral safety switch on 2000 mazda mpv

ALLData.com probably has the best info for your MPV. I use it for my 2000 MPV and it hasn't failed me yet. Mazda wants $250 for a shop manual and Haynes hasn't written one as of yet. My MPV right now won't come out of 2nd gear because of (I'm hoping) a bad PRNDL Range Select Switch.

Changed alternator in 2000 mpv battery comes on and off

Check the large fusible link labeled ALT in the under hood fuse box. If this fuse gets blown, the alternator wont be able to charge even if it IS new, because the ALT circuit is open.
