How long did the 2nd alt. last before it died? The voltage regulator is, I believe, attached to the alternator. Have u had the voltage regulator checked?

SOURCE: Charging problem.. Wont charge battery

The instructions for installing a new alternator usually read to fully charge the battery (12.3 - 12.8 volt range). Otherwise, the alternator will be damaged when it initializes. I have seen some extreme damage result from installing a new alternator with a low-charge battery. The torque required to turn an alternator when damaged in this scenario is unbelieveable!

On the terminal maked"l" you need to put switched power from the ignition[ the problem], will go away.If this is not an option then you can get an alternator repair shop to put a self exciting regulater and it will kick in with a quick rev of the engine,no wireing required

SOURCE: 2003 Hyundai Elantra alternator will not charge

If you have replaced the alternator and the battery has been checked and showed to be in good working condition then the only thing left is either a bad fusable link or cable (negative or psitive) going from battery to engine. You should inspect these cables and there connections. Corrosion on these connections can cause these problems. You also mention that the alternator will not keep car running. It should when you disconnect the negative battery cable while the engine is running. If all connections and cables are good and you haven't replaced alternator then you should do so.

I have a 1997 Saturn SL and I have replaced the alternator and the battery but it still will not hold a charge. It normally takes 1/2 a day or so for it to be completely dead. What is the problem

It's not charging ? You may have replaced the alternator , but did you check the power supply to it . Could have burnt fuse's .Is the battery symbol light lit on the instrument cluster ? When you turn the key to the on position does the battery symbol light light up ? If the bulb is burnt out the charging system will not work ! Buy a volt meter an check voltage at the battery with engine running , should see around 14 volts . if you see 12 or under it isn't charging .

My 2003 Bravada has "battery not charging" light, but car starts fine. Auto Zone tested battery...Fine. Said it was alternator, but how do i know?

Suing a volt meter check to see what the charging voltage is at the battery with the engine running. If you see more than 14 volts than the alternator is working. If you see less than 13 and most likely you will see 12, the alternator is not working. Next shut off the engine and make sure there is 12 volts on the large cable/terminal on the back of the alternator. If there is replace the alternator.

Can alternator put out 14.2 volts but not enough amps to charge battery and turn off dattery light?

Yes and no.
It sounds like you have a wiring problem.
The alternator output could be 14 volts and only one or two amps, but that would be enough to kill the warning light. Its more likely the alternator is charging but the current is not reaching the battery.

1999 Toyota Tacoma battery keeps dying

This is easy to test but you need a multimeter. Connect the multimeter to the battery and run the engine at a fast idle (say 2000 rpm). You should get a voltage reading anywhere from 14 to 15 volts if the battery is fully charged and the alternator is working. If the reading is around 12 volts, then the alternator is not working.

I replaced the alternator and battery in our 2000 buick regal, but it doesnt want to keep a charge still. Its just running off the battery. What would be the next solution?

Check the voltage at the battery when the engine is running. It should be 14 volts or more when the alternator is charging and around 12 volts if it is not.

Sounds like a bad alternator. Drained your battery and when you turned on the lights it took all the power left in your battery. When you drain a battery down that far, they are real hard to jump, and coupled with the alternator, the car is not producing enough current to start and stay running.

I would take the alternator off and take it to oyur local auto parts store to be tested. If bad, replace it and charge the battery fully before starting. Then check voltage at battery with motor running. Should be 13.2 -14 Volts DC. If not, you may have a bad battery cable or blown fusible link. (especially that if the alternator tests good).....Mike

probably the alternator, when you replaced the battery it had a full charge and once the vehicle used all that charge up and it wasn't charging it could no longer start the car anymore. If your battery light is on in the car it is a fairly certain sign that the alternator is not charging. Generally an AVR test is the best way to check the alternator, but if you can jump start the vehicle, connect a voltmeter to the battery it should be around 14 volts when the vehicle is running and around 12 volts when the vehicle is not running. If it is not at 14 volts when it is running, it is not charging.

When the car is running check the voltage at the battery. You should see 14 volts. If you see around 12 volts or less the alternator is not charging.
