Question about 1986 Ford Ranger 2WD

Truck runs fine but when you least expect it ,it will quit runing

Truck is a 1986 ford Ranger 2.9 Fuel Inj. 4X4 I have drove this truck app.8 to 10 miles then it would start acting like it was smothering down when you try to give it gas, then it would die I can let it sit for 5 minutes and it will start back, you might move a 100 yards then it will do it again it will continue this for 5 or 6 times then it will start back and you can go on your way.some days I may go 20 miles without it doing this at all,it"s not consistant in what it is doing some days it runs like a new truck and it does not make any difference if the gas tank is on full or only a quarter of a tank .Also the four wheel drive used to work fine but now when you press the 4X4 switch nothing happens ( It is a electric 4X4 in the over head console.)

Thanks for the help,my truck is fuel injected so it does not have a carb but I am going to have a machanic check out the o2 sensors.

I am going to ck out the fuses and if I do not find any blown fuses I will have my macnanic look at the electromagnatic ring that engages the 4x4. Thanks you have been a great help.

Sounds like a problem with the carb or a o2 sensor check all your fuses and see if you have any that are blown. as far as the 4wd goes there is a electromagnetic ring that engages the 4wd check the switch for power then check the relay connected to that... if thats not the problem then trace from the relay to the hub/or transmission

When it stops check the fuel pressure. Also check for fault codes as this maybe ignition related as well.

1989 Ford Ranger 2.9 liter 4x4 Runs Horrible

change fuel filter. add can of SEAFOAM(parts house) to fuel. It sounds like the beginning of EGS(ethanol gas syndrome). corn liquor substance, water, and clogging. all caused by ethanol fuel.

1986 ford ranger ready to burn it to the ground

check the ignition switch, they separate and cause this stall out, try holding the ignition to the crank position just short of causing the starter to run, if the engine stays running then the ignition switch is defective, Ford recalled many of these for this problem, not sure your truck was affected, but it does use the sam switch and gets the same problem.
