On my 1997 GMC the manual says, slow to 1 to 3 mph keep wheels straight. Put transmission into neutral and then move floor lever/shifter forward from 2H into 4LO. Do the 2H to N to 4L in one single motion so that it slips in easier,if you linger in neutral it may not mesh gears correctly. You will hear a slight sound when it slips in. Personally I just reversed the procedure to get it back to 2H.

check vacuum lines, near air canisters and air filters etc, usually rubber hoses, may be cracked ,split, dry rot enough to let air in. may as well start there.

SOURCE: im installing a 1996 tranny
Will not work, 95 and up are pwm Lock up units.93 and 94 were on/off lock up units.Pump, valve body and solenoid resistance and different. You will have a no lock-up condition and will burn up transmission.

Most ignitions you will need to remove the plastic shroud around the steering colum. Have a good look at the complete barel & mount & you should find a small hole. When the key is in a certain position (usualy accessories) there is a little pin in that hole. You push the pin in with small allenkey, jewler screwdriver etc... & the barel will just slide out.
