Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

2002 ford escort 2.0 SE was stuck in park because the brake light switch was sticking. Went to spray wd40 on it & while i was doing this i held down the brake pedal with my other hand for a min or less(key was not in the ignition). Now the car wont start (doesnt turn over, no clicking, nothing). Battery fine. Brake lights work but brake pedal stiff from pressing on it. Lights turn on, cd player works, fuses fine. I can shift it to neutral and it rolls but wont start. Hadnt had any issues starting previously

after running some tests Im pretty sure the starter went bad. The connection from the ignition switch to the starter is good.

You may have damaged something with the spray, just start looking and testing the system to see were the starter signal stops.

SOURCE: My car is stuck in park, the brake lights do not

The neutral safety switch on the tranny is going out. Replace this switch and you should not have any more problems. This switch registers that your foot is on the brake before it will allow it to come out of park to keep kids from accidently engaging the shifter.

SOURCE: 2008 impala won't start or shift out of park, key is difficult to remove from ignition.

Sound like a problem with the Neutral Ssafety Switch, this is located on top transmission (generally) and its possible that need some adjust.

This problem sounds like you dislodged the switch on the brake pedal lever. You need the signal to unlock the vehicle from Park. You will probably find that the Brake lights do not work when you press the brake pedal.

Now if the switch is good, you probably broke the fuse feeding power to the switch. You can get a wiring diagram online by running a Websearch or going to Autozone.com and registering your car. This site has a HELP section at the bottom of the page and you would need to toggle between free and pay info.

Won't shift out of park

You probably have a defective brake light switch. The brake light circuit controls the shift interlock. This is made so small children cannot shift the vehicle out of park....You have to step on the brake and work the shifter at the same time...little kids can't do that. Anyway, check your brake lights to see if they are working. If they are not working, this is your problem. The most likely cause would be the brake switch mounted under the dash on the pedal assembly.

MY 2002 ESCORT ZX2 BRAKE LIGHTS STAY ON,AT THE SAME TIME MY CRUSE CONTROLL STOPPED WORKED

These 2 symptoms indicate the brake switch above the brake pedal is shorted or stuck closed. Try unplugging the connector from the switch. If this resolves the problem, replace switch. Let us know if you have more questions.

Can't get out of park. Brake lights OK. 2002 ford excort se, automatic

In Alot of the newer Fords the brake pedal must be depressed to put the vehicle into gear, this is contolled by a sensor near the top portion of the brake lever, just because your brake lights are working, does not mean this switch, is properly functioning, also it is very possible there is a second switch located in the same area that controls this function. Also if this vehicle is a console shift, it is possible that the safety switch that is connected to shifter is disconnected or broken, this will stop your car from shifting into gear as well. Hope this helps!
