The following are the general instructions on the start of diagnosing any electronically controlled engine or transmission problem.

The engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM or ECM,ECU), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems. Also engine mechanical problems can and do cause many drive-ability related problem such as rough idle and other symptoms.

You have a vacume leak somewhere. You can try to listen for it or you can get a can of brake parts cleaner and spray it around the engine. Anywhere there is hoses or connections of any kind. When you find the leak the engine RPM's will increase. If thats not the problem it could be your EGR valve is clogged or your map sensor could be bad. Those things would usually cause a check engine light. Vacume leaks wont. Good luck

If it does not do it in park or neutral, it could be a number of things. One being a sticking Torque Converter Clutch solenoid (TCC). It could be that it needs a simple tune-up. How often does this problem happen?

2000 olds alero chimes once twice three times and four times when the car is running and in park. the chime stops when in gear then starts again when back in park


Has your Alero been parked for an extended time, or is the weather really dirty where you are? May need to clean all 4 door acentuators...(spray with PB Blaster) and wipe off excess...may be sticking...any interior lights on? Best test would be to dis-connect the battery posts for 15 minutes and then re-connect. (this reset the memory) Any check engine lights on? Hope this helps.

Idling rough when put into foward/reverse gears


Check clutch master and slave cylinder, and throwout bearing.

If automatic, change transmission fluid and go from there.

My 2000 Alero 2.4 has a very rough idle while stopped with vehicle in gear. When vehicle is in neutral idle is smooth.


I have the same problem and I found it today. On the front of the engine there is a 4 inch l black 1/4 inch hose that goes from the air intake to a sensor. Its right in the very front it might blend in with some wires and other hoses but they are bigger. That hose is probably coroded and falling apart. Look for it when the engine is running and there will be a suction on that hose and it will be sucked flat instead of round. If you touch it the car might die or sputter even more. Replace that hose with any tubing and away you go.

Running roug at low idle, smooths out at 2500 rpms


change plug and wire if its been a while most cars have 90000 miles platinum plugs in them.but the wires wear before plugs.so change plugs and wires.+clean fuel injectors .change fuel filter and air filter.if car still run rough your idling to low.have idling check .
