Question about Cars & Trucks

Open Question

I have a 1880's roll top desk. It has a door on the right side of the lower right part of the desk and 4 drawers on the left side of the lower part of the desk. I can lock the roll top and unlock with a key. The four drawers have become locked and I have no idea why? I have tried locking and unlocking the roll top and seeing if the drawers will open but no luck. Any suggestions. The desk has been in my family for over 40 years and my Father has never had this happen before.

You'll need to replace the solenoid (motor) that doesn't work. Not hard once you get the door panel off. I suggest you buy the correct part, not a universal one.

How do I get my drivers door open...I have tried the key and electric locks but drivers door will not open

It appears to me that the door hinge bushings have worn out , do not force the inner or outer door handles. Lower the window and use the top part of the window frame to left up on the door to release the weight on the door latch and try to open it. If this allows the door to open your hinge bushing are worn out and allowing the door to sag putting it's weight on the door latch. This is common on drivers doors because of being the most used.

This is the car and truck section - - my first guess is something inside the drawer is jammed against the top.

Heat in my 1994 Mercury Grand marquis stopped working abruptley. What should I be checking for? Core not clogged or leaking.

sudden failures are usually the blend door actuator. Unfortunately, you have to remove the dash to get the actuator out. It sits on top of the heater box in the second picture below. I have pasted the procedure below from autozone.com. Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6235876-no_heat_fan_blowing_cold_air . If you get stuck, please get back to me, and thanks for using FixYa.

My heater valve cracked

you will have to replace the heater core if you are confirmed the heater valve is cracked.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.2. Drain the cooling system and disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core tubes. Plug the hoses and the heater core tubes to prevent coolant leakage.3. Remove the 3 nuts located below the windshield wiper motor attaching the left end of the plenum to the dash panel. Remove the 1 nut retaining the upper left corner of the evaporator case to the dash panel.4. Disconnect the vacuum supply hose(s) from the vacuum source. Push the grommet and vacuum supply hose(s) into the passenger compartment.5. Remove the right and left lower instrument panel insulators.6. On 1990-00 vehicles:
1. Remove the cross body brace and disconnect the wiring harness from the temperature blend door actuator.
2. Disconnect the ATC sensor tube from the evaporator case connector.
7. Disconnect the vacuum jumper harness at the multiple vacuum connector near the floor air distribution duct. Disconnect the white vacuum hose from the outside-recirculating door vacuum motor.8. Remove the 2 hush panels.9. Remove 1 plastic push fastener retaining the floor air distribution duct to the left end of the plenum. Remove the left screw and loosen the right screw on the rear face of the plenum and remove the floor air distribution duct.10. Remove the 2 nuts from the 2 studs along the lower flange of the plenum.11. Carefully move the plenum rearward to allow the heater core tubes and the stud at the top of the plenum to clear the holes in the dash panel. Remove the plenum from the vehicle by rotating the top of the plenum forward, down and out from under the instrument panel. Carefully pull the lower edge of the instrument panel rearward, as necessary, while rolling the plenum from behind the instrument panel.12. Remove the 4 retaining screws from the heater core cover and remove the cover from the plenum assembly. Pull the heater core and seal assembly from the plenum assembly.

Trying to locate the fuse box as the cigarette lighter is not working

The main fuse box is under the hood in the front left of the engine compartment beneath a roughly 14"x3" black plastic cover, right againt the outside edge of the engine compartment, you can't miss it . You can inspect each fuse by pulling out to see if any have blown. There is space for 3 spare fuses which may hold spare fuses. There is another fuse box, called the "instrument panel fuse box." It is located inside the car, forward of the driver's left knee, behind the coin drawer that sits to the left of the steering column. Just pull out the drawer and you'll see the fuse block. There's a chart on the back of the drawer, in addition to the charts that can be found for both fuse boxes in the rear of the owner's manual.

I need to fix my driver side window

Sorry but you need a new window regulator assembly. There is no way to repair them as they are made cheaply and once they break or bend they don't ever work right again. Napa has a part number for them here: BK 6653604
Window Regulator - Left Front 1 0 u_clear.gif 180.86 BodyStyle:2 Dr. Coupe;
or for a 4 door: BK 6653606
Window Regulator - Left Front 1 0.00 u_clear.gif 180.86 BodyStyle:4 Dr. Sedan; the trade cost is 155.00 if you know someone with an account.
As an ex-gm tech I recommend a new gm part though I do not have the part number for that.
Have someone do this that is familiar with door panel removal or you will have a bunch of broken fasteners and the door panel will be loose fitting and rattle. Good luck . Scott
