98 and 99 intrepid was manufactured with weak fuel pumps causing them to vapor lock try pouring cool water on the fuel rails on the intake to calm vapored gas then try to start it. Even the temp gauge at half way mark is probably still low on coolant causing engine to be warmer than normal causing the vapor lock to fix this problem replace the fuel pump with a 2000 or newer intrepid fuel pump that carries a little higher psi to prevent vapor lock from reoccurring this pump is compatible with your 98 it will plug right in
What this sounds like is a problem with your fuel pump. This could be checked buy doing a preasure test which will tell you if pump is on it's way out. Then of course you would have to replace it yourself or have it replaced. GOOD LUCK.
the car cranking over has nothing to do with the fuel pump
The car will crank all day(with a good battery and no fuel pump
If the cranks one time and then quits you need to be looking at the starting system NOT fuel system
looks like your intrepid has what is know as a driveability problem
1. electric fuel pump is failing
2. injectors are mis-firing due to clogs: 1 or more has failed
3. someone has been naughty and dumped something in your fuel tank while you slept
It's mounted on the front of the engine block
and connected to the radiator and various other parts through a series
of hoses. It's rotated by the timing belt. Study these parts, as you'll
have to remove them.
