Question about GMC Cars & Trucks

How do i replace the transmission fluid dipstick in a 1996 sierra?

So my trans was slipping some lately and today while driving on the interstate there was about 20 seconds of white smoke in the rear view mirror. When i got to my destination (slippage was worse), went to check fluid and while unlatching the dipstick, the tube pulled out it has broken just behind the block about 2" above where it goes into the trans case. My question is how to replace it? is it threaded or just sealed? Can anyone help? In looking at the part at Autozone.com it looks straight forward enough and not very expensive but before I attempt I want to know my odds, or if I should just break down and take it to a shop.

The transmission fluid dipstick is facing the engine, look around the fire wall on passenger side, then look down.

What is wrong with my Nissan 2013 Altima feels like trans is slipping and jerking when taken to the dealer nothing shows up on the computer

todays cars have several computer controls and sensors on the transmissions, and often when you have a problem it will show up on the computer. However there are still many internal mechanical parts that in know way register on the computer system, clutch disc wearing out causing slipping, a gear with teeth worn causing jerking or a torque converter can cause vibration or what some people describe as a jerking feeling..it sounds like you have something internal going on with the transmission. if you pull the transmission dipstick out trans fluid is a pinkish red color...if you see dark streaks or little fine pieces of ground metal on the dipstick its an indication that you have internal component wearing out. It is normal for these parts to wear, there is a magnet in the bottom of the transmission pan to collect these metal fragments,,but if you can see them mixed with the fluid on the dipstick the wear is usually excessive. and guessing you are probably still under warranty, If you are driving and it is doing it noticeably enough to record a video with your cell phone, and proof of a problem will help your cause.

Check the fluid level in the transmission with the engine running in neutral You will have to wipe the dipstick (Located near firewall ) several times to avoid getting a false reading Fill to top mark using a funnel down dipstick tube with trans fluid

CHECK THE TRANSMISSION FLUID TO SEE IF IT IS LOW. THERE SHOULD BE A COLD LEVEL AND A HOT LEVEL. WITH THE TRANS IN PARK AND HOT, ENGINE RUNNING PULL THE DIPSTICK TO SEE IF THE TRANS NEEDS FLUID. WHEN ADDING, MAKE SURE THE PROPER FLUID IS USED. IF THE TRANS FLUID LEVEL IS OK BUT THE TRANS FLUID SMELLS BURNED OR IS VERY DARK THEN HAVE THE TRANSMISSION SERVICED WITH FLUID AND FILTER. I HOPE THIS HELPS. THANKS FOR USING FIX-YA AND FOR ANY COMMENTS. BEST OF LUCK

I have a 1992 GMC Sierra with a 5.7 motor. When

It sounds to me like your transmission is not well. It's working when the fluid is cold but not as it warms up. Pull the dipstick and check your transmission fluid for color and smell. It should be pinkish and smell like oil. My guess is that it will be closer to brown than pink and have a burnt oil smell to it. It the transmission is full, check the level with the trans warm, engine running, in neutral.I'd be shopping for another transmission. If the fluid is below the add mark, you an usually buy yourself some time on the replacement by changing the trans fluid and filter. At the same time add a transmission treatment with the new oil,I've had good luck with Lucas. Hope this helps.

Yes you have a Transmission problem that is only going to get worse.
There is nothing to do now that will solve this problem. You can pull the dipstick and look/smell the fluid to verify this but unfortunately the only thing to do now is have the transmission rebuilt/replaced.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

There isn't one your not crazy. There is a small red cap on the drivers side of the engine compartment for adding fluid I would recommend having it checked at a repair shop it can be a pain in the rear
