Dome lights will not turn on
Sorry i have to say this, but have you checked the bulb? the cover pulls off pretty easily.next, check the fuse. the dome light fuse will run with another electrical component. be sure to check them all!and if you can manually turn on the light. check the door switch located in the door jamb close to the latch.

SOURCE: 2005 altima Tried to replace
It's possible that you need to replace the shift lock solenoid, for work in this, you must remove the console.
To take off the console completely just have one easy. There are many screws in hidden spots, under the glove box lid. Pop the little trim pieces off of everything on the center console. Aalso under the little square rubber stops for the glove box.
Hope thos help you.

SOURCE: 1998 nissan maxima fuse location
bacon79: inside the car, in front of your left knee in the fuse block you are interested in looking at.
Remove the cover. You will see 3 rows of "ATO" type fuses arranged in a vertical fashion.
Often they will put a number to the right of the fuse.
In your specific case, you are interested in the center row of fuses.
Look at the top fuse which should be a 7.5 amp and the number next to it should be "26". Anyway, if you remove this fuse and look through it, it will either be burned through the center, have a hairline crack, or be solid. If it is the later and the dome light doesn't work, let me know and I'll see if I can help you.

Center is the off position. Position 2 is "on when doors are open", Position 1 is "on all the time". The switch (relay) that turns it on when the door opens is likely bad. Play with the button ont he door frame to see if this problem is there.
Also, check if the light comes on when you unlock the car when the swich is in position 1. If light does come on when unlocking, you have a bad switch on the door frame (turns light on when you open the door when the doors were already unlocked). If you don't get light, the switch by the dome light might be bad.
