VW T4 Auto - Jamming Gear Selector

Hi, recently the gear selector in my auto is getting Jammed in Park. Sometimes it is as simple as letting the car idle for 5 or 10 minutes and then "magically" it unjams itself and then other times i have to pull the gear selector apart and then put it back together again. It is getting more and more frequent. Any ideas as to what i should look at? Thanks in advance :)

Be sure to check your brake switch. when this is happening, are your brake lights turning on? every vehicle has a shift lock that is enabled by the brake switch. if your lights aren't coming on during this issue. check the switch. the switch will be located at the top of the brake pedal.unfortunately on a vw, you must drop the lower shield that covers the lower dash. parts are cheap if this is the issue. totaling around 25.00

IT COULD BE A FUSE ,IT COULD BE A RELAY TOO, BECAUSE IF IT IS NOT GETTING POWER TO THE SWITCH ON THE BRAKE PEDAL OR FROM THE COLUMN TO THE SWITCH, IT WILL NOT LET IT RELEASE, ITS ALSO POSSIBLE THE SWITCH IS BAD ON THE BRK PEDAL.

SOURCE: mazda3 gear selector won't light up ''P'' for park

I had the same problem and I fixed it by oiling the gear shaft beside the transmission tank. There is no taking apart anything in the transmision but instead the shaft that is visible under the car I oiled.

2007 Vauxhall astra auto still drives in park

Could be 1 of 2 problems
1. Automatic gear boxes use brake bands to slow the car down when changing down gear at reduced speed these also lock the gearbox when the selector is placed in park.
If the bands are worn then the car will creep when placed in park.
2. The selector electronics are faulty or need adjusting (this needs to be carried out by a tech machine at a garage).

Hope thais helps

Mercedes-Benz s430 stuck in park what do I do

One of two things will make a vehicle's gear selector stick in park:
  1. Brake pedal interlock circuit problem or brake pedal interlock solenoid failure; or
  2. Problem with the transmission linkage.
FIRST THING TO CHECK: ARE YOUR BRAKE LIGHTS COMING ON WHEN YOU PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL? If not, your brake light circuit is having an issue, which means that the gear selector interlock solenoid will not release the gear selector. Check the fuse, the brake light switch under the dashboard, and all connectors. If your brake lights are coming on skip that.
SECOND THING TO CHECK: Have you tried manually releasing the interlock override at the gear selector? Check your user manual. It will instruct you to place your key in the slot near the PRNDL indicator on your center console (assuming that your gear selector is not on the steering column), or where to release the selector manually if the selector is on the steering column.
ARE YOU PARKED ON A HILL? Sometimes, parking on a steep incline will cause the park pin to jam into place. If this occurs, you will need to push the vehicle uphill slightly (get a couple of friends to help) so that you may get the vehicle out of Park.
IF you cannot manually release the gear selector using the override, you will need to have your car towed to a garage and have them check the transmission linkage. Sometimes the linkage gets jammed, sometimes the park pin gets jammed, and sometimes magical trolls interfere with our lives covertly... best of luck to you!

Will not go into reverse ever other gear works

First is it a AUTO or a MANUAL
2nd If auto and the selector all other gears inc Park N,and gears 1234 then either you have a reverse pump problem or thereverse band is badly worn .
But if its a Manual box then the selector pin in the selector has come out or broken or the indent ball has jamed up in the housing???.

Let me know how you get on Ron

My gear selector is locked up. I can manually press a lever to unlock it and can then shift into gear. Once I get the gear selector unlocked, it works just fine.

Hi it sounds like the problem is with the clutch unless you vehicle is auto if its auto box then the chances are this needs replacing if you have manual gearbox then i would get the clutch replaced or looked at.
If the clutch is ok then it could be that the gear selector inside the gearbox is worn and needs replacing if this is the case then it would be cheaper to get a reconditioned gearbox as repairing it would cost about the same as a recon.
If you need further assistance then let me know ok
