Question about Cars & Trucks
The shock is most likely frozen.to disconnect this, go to either the top or bottom of the shock. there is a u shaped metal tab. use a flat head screw driver to pry this off. be careful, its going to be under some pressure! then, just pop the shock off of the small ball on the pivot side. make sure to hold the hood when you do this, because the hood will slam shut, or even worse on you! if the shock wont come off the ball, push the hood up a little bit to take the pressure off of it.

SOURCE: HOOD RELEASE
try getting another person to push hood down whilst you pull the release lever if this does not work locate cable behind puller handle and use pliers to pull just a little more then when opened be sure to adjust cable a little tighter

I had the same problem with mine. while standing in front of the car, have someone push down and forward on the hood (torwards the windshield). While you pull the hood release. Try spraying some wd40 on the latch where the crack between the hood and the front bumper is. after you get it open, clean the latch. Mine was really dirty.

Sounds like the new strut is either upside down or defective. When you purchase these make sure you get a hood support not a lift gate. The lift gate ones are for a much lighter rear hatch and will not support a hood.

I had this happen to my 1999 Honda Civic. I took it to my mechanic and they had to pry the hood open by snapping the latch and then they replaced it.
