I have a 99 Honda Odyssey. It has about 80,000 miles on it. It has been slipping worse and worse every day. When I first start it, I hear a whining noise. Then it quiets down after a while. It has plenty of transmission fluid in it. I am wondering what it could be so I can get it fixed. I can't afford a rebuilt transmission! Can anyone help me?

SOURCE: Transmission fluid/filter change in 2000 Honda Odyssey

I would not recommend using Dexron III. Honda Odysseys are prone to transmission problems. A drain and fill with Genuine Honda Fluid is Recommended. The drain plug can be removed with a 3/8 ratchet at the bottom of the trans. The fill hole is at the top of the trans. You remove it with a socket on a long extension. The capacity is close to 3 quarts

SOURCE: p0740 code on 2000 Honda Odyssey

Code p0740 is a problem in lock up control solenoid assembly, Check whether scan tool indicates another code. Does the scan tool indicate another code? YES - Perform the Troubleshooting Flowchart for the indicated Code(s). Do not continue with this troubleshooting until the causes of any other DTCs have been corrected. Measure the line pressure. Is the line pressure within the service limit? Repair the hydraulic system as necessary. Replace the Lock-up Control Solenoid Assembly set lock-up control solenoid valve/shift control solenoid valve A assembly and the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve A/B assembly. Turn the ignition switch OFF, and reset the PCM memory by removing the BACK UP fuse in the passenger's under-dash fuse/relay box for more than 10 seconds . Using the scan tool, check to be sure that the engine coolant temperature is 176°F (80°C) or above . Drive the vehicle at 55 mph (88 km/h) for more than one minute . Recheck for code P0740. Does the OBD II scan tool indicate code P0740? YES - Remove the torque converter and inspect for a missing torque converter O-ring. If the O-ring is damaged or missing, replace the transmission and torque converter. NO - The system is OK at this time.

I would try changing the filter, I've seen some that should be changed every 20,000 miles. You might want to check for any DTC codes stored for the transmission. Auto Zone will do it for free. If there is a code that might point you in the right direction.

2001 Odessey with 75K miles and the transmission started slipping...what do I do?

You can try changing the fluid but the 99-03 Odyssey transmissions were notorious for failure and yours is likely about to die, meaning a rebuild or replacement. Take a look at www.odyclub.com - you'll find a wealth of information on this.
