Open Question

My 2001 dodge durango sputters when i am on the freeway and try to go over 65 also it sometimes jerks to. when i come to a stop it has a hard time picking up speed. it feels like there is no power. soemtimes the car wont even start when i go around the corner to the gas station and get back in . but after i let it sit for a while it will run fine . i was told that it could be the engine speed sensor. does this sound like anything to you? please help

If the speedometer still works, then no you don't need the speed sensor. The problem sounds more like the catalytic converter Which was a recall item on most Durangos and Dakotas for that year should be replaced for free at the dealer.

If you have an automatic transmission, you may be experiencing torque converter clutch (TCC) lockup shudder. There is a solenoid in auto transmissions that engages a clutch in the torque converter to save gas on the highway. These frequently stick open and cause problems at stoplights. IF you have an auto, a pretty good way to check if this is the problem is to put the car in neutral at a stoplight (CAREFULLY) and see if the problem goes away. Also, the clutch should not engage until the vehicle is warmed up, so if your problem happens when your car is cold, this is probably not the issue. Sometimes, these solutions can be inexpensive. I fixed my own TCC solenoid on my 1993 Chevy for about $20. Other times it can get spendy.

Check the fuel pressure and ignition system, fuel pressure should be no more than 65 psi and no less than 52, listen to fuel injectors with a piece of steel brake line to hear if they are opening and closing, replace fuel filter , check plugs!

Have the cam sensor and/or crankshaft sensor checked. They could be going bad.
