I DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE SHIFT HANDKE WILL MOVE BUT DO NOT GET INTO ANY GEAR, JUST PARK

  • rmorales100 Jan 04, 2009

EVEN THOU I DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL TO SHIFT FROM PARK AND THE HANDLE MOVE TO ALL POSITIONS (R,N,D,D,L), THE TRANSMISSION WONT GET INTO GEAR. I CHECK ALL FUSES AND RELAYS AND THEY APPEAR TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION. COULD IT POSSIBLY BE A BROKEN CABLE THAT GOES FROM THE SHIFTING HANDLE TO A PART INDIDE THE DOOD WICH MOVES WHEN YOU SHIFT THE HANDLE?

  • rmorales100 Jan 06, 2009

iT WAS THE TRANSMISSION CONVERTER, NOT THE CABLE. tHANKS FOR YOUR HELP

I have the same issue, and Lee, that much is true with mine. I can get the shifter to move effortlessy, but the car seems to not engage into the gear I set it in. Basically, the car will not move. Mine was in motion when it went out, and the funny thing is, is that I only have 50k miles on the car itself for an '03.

If shift feels normal ( NOT LOOSE) when shifting, then you definitely need to REBUILD your transmission. Good Luck Hey make sure you get a good warranty at least 6 months/ 12,000 miles, do expect to spend at least 1,000+ for this job. Thanks for using FIX YA

It could be the shifter cable...it may have stretched or broken.it could also possibly be the transmission but i wouldnt think so if you had no problems with it prior to this.

Sounds like you will need to have the transmission rebuilt. Either way you will have to have a professional look at. This is a fairly common occurrence with these fords. How many miles are on the vehicle? If you need help locating a dealership or local mechanic I would be more then happy to assist you further. Please take a moment to accept and rate my solution accordingly.
Thanks,
Lee

I am assuming you can get the shifter to move into position but the car itself is not engaging into drive?
    Thanks,

Welcome to Fixya! You could have a Bad Sensor on the Brake pedal. You should have to Depress the Brake to shift from Park and this Sensor tells the Computer to Release the Shifter.

Could be the Shift Linkage on the Side of the Transmission is Binding. Could have dirt Compacted around it?

Yes it very well could be. There is also a Circuit Board Mounted on the Side of the Tranny in a Box that can Act the Same way if it is Malfunctioning.

My 91 mercury sable wont shift to any gear

Hi there:First check transmission fluid levels, if the are ok on quality and good level, could be a problem with the torque converter or valve solenoids.

Hope helps.

MERCURY SABLE - NO PROBLEM WITH TRANS. YESTERDAY STARTUP THIS MORNING WONT GO IN ANY GEAR SEEMS LIKE IN IN NEUTRAL. BOLT SEEMS LIKE IN PLACE HOLDING LINKAGE

Either your hydraulic clutch in your transmission has failed or your shifting linkage has disconnected or failed. Hydraulic clutch replacement is common for Ford products, especially in 2003.

2003 Mercury Sable AX4N Transmission Problems

I have a 2003 Mercury Sable as well - my transmission went out with only 52,000 miles. I checked with Ford company and they do not have any recalls on the transmission, however I think it odd that you had the same problem with the same model with in the past 6 months.

Car wont move.

Could be that your linkage is broken and just looks like it is shifting or a bad tranny module or tranny but i would look at the linkage and see if it is hooked up to the tranny.
