Since you have to take the old one out it would be best to go ahead and replace it. Whatever stopped the filter up you don't want in your Fuel injection.

There are three possibilities:
1. Fuel pump and filter
2. Catalytic converter plugging up
3. Lack of venting on the fuel tank.

My car starts, then instantly dies. Could it be the fuel filter

It could be the filter, but it could also be the fuel pump.

Engine losses power

Check your fuel pressure to make sure the fuel pump is putting out the pressure that the manufacturer requires for the motor. Auto Zone rents out the tool required to check this. Always check pressure on either side of the fuel filter as the filter may be causing a drop in pressure.

2003 chevy silverado 2500HD - died going down the highway 60mph - seems to be fuel pump/filter issue but I had it towed home and it does start up now?

Hello. Begin by changing the fuel filter. Also add a bottle of a fuel additive called seafoam to the fuel tank. Then drive it. J.

Stalled 2 blks from home. Engine turns over, but won't fire. Towed home, but next it starts. Drive it 3 miles and same thing again. 3 hours later we go back to tow it home, and it starts right up, but...

check the filter! first! it is possible its stopped up! when taking the filter lose start at the rear line and check to see how much pressure comes out? if its little to no! pressure then the fuel pump is weak!

That was my first thought as well... replace the fuel filter to increase fuel flow to keep up with the higher speeds and acceleration.

2000 Yukon driving on highway at normal spped and

It sounds like your fuel filter has got to the end of it's life and needs to be replaced. Once the fuel filter get's to dirty, the fuel pump can no longer keep the proper fuel pressure to the fuel injectors to have them work properly. The fuel filter should be replaced once a year or 30,000 miles to ensure that it's always clean. A dirty fuel filter will make the fuel pump work harder and shorten it's life time causing a costly fuel sending unit replacement. Good luck and be safe.

My Audi won't start it shut off when driving.

The fuel pump is dead. I would have the fuel filter and pump changed.
At least you made it home.
