When the service engine soon light (Also called the check engine light or engine management light) is turned on this is to alert you to the fact that Powertrain Control Module (computer) has detected a failure somewhere in the systems it controls you may not feel any difference in the way the engine runs, this can be the transmission or the engine or emission system, there are fault codes set in the modules memory for these faults. What needs to happen now is to have the powertrain control module scanned with a special tool called an OBD2 electronic engine control scanner or a OBD2 code reader. Once the code(s) are read then you must perform the diagnostics for each code and make the appropriate repairs based on the findings of the diagnosis that was performed, this is called doing "Pinpoint" testing.

Check fluid levels. If low add fluid and have it checked for leaks. If fluid level is OK, I would have the transmission solenoid and filter checked out.if these parts are not the problem, your looking towards an overhaul.

check transmission fluid level when hot,engine running in neutral.fluid should be reddish in color,should not smell burnt.
trans fluid & filter should be replaced at +/- 100k miles.
possibly transmission shift solenoid.

97 dodge intrepid engine light comes on. Code reads tork cellinoid and transmission circuit problem. The car does not jump around like it is having transmission issues. What do I do?


The torque converter solenoid is supposed to mechanically lock up the torque converter at highway speeds to improve gas mileage (eliminate converter slip). Sometimes they get stuck on - in that case the engine may stall on the downshift - it would be like trying to shift a manual transmission without pushing in the clutch pedal.

If the solenoid is not locking the torque converter when it should, you lose economy and performance at high speed and may have greater wear on the torque converter. If you can live with that, you can ignore the problem. Replacing the torque converter solenoid is probably not a trivial task - I don't know about your model, but it probably involves working inside the transmission.

One thing you can try is to disconnect the solenoid and hot-wire 12 Volts to it while listening for its movement. If you can hear or feel it engaging, the solenoid is OK and you have a problem either with the wiring or the solenoid driver circuit in the engine computer.

I have a 2000 chrysier town & country 3.8 it shifts gears sometimes and then it is stuck in one gear can anyone help?


It sounds like you are either low on transmission fluid, or you have a shift solenoid or TCC Solenoid that is failing. Check the transmission fluid level when the engine is warmed up. If the fluid is at the correct level, see if your check engine light is on. If the CEL light is on, you probably have a failed Solenoid Valve. Have the code checked to find out which solenoid is faulty.

Hi!!
Your problem is most likely the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Solenoid valve. Check Fuse and Related wiring, if all looks OK, remove transmission pan to get to the TCC Solenoid. The solenoid packs are known to leak. You will need to remove:
  • The transmission cooling lines
  • the Speed Sensor,
  • the plug on the solenoid block,
  • the 3 tenmm bolts on the top of the Solenoid pack,
  • the solenoid pack,
  • old gasket (the new pack comes with new gasket)

Install
  • The new Solenoid Pack,
  • the new gasket ,
  • the Speed Sensor and,
  • Transmission Cooling Lines

Start vehicle, check Transmission fluid level, check for proper shifting and have computer reset.

the pcm wont purge the solenoid if you're idling. rev up the motor a bit, its not a for sure thing the pcm will command it in park either, u may have to drive it and check it. the guys at the shop can activate it with there scan tool too. check those filler tubes carefully, if the shop smoked it from the port, sometimes it wont fill the filler neck. sometimes u cant see the smoke. look down inside the tube and check for cracks, esp if its plastic.

The transmission was having trouble shifting so I checked the fluid and it's way low. mark is at add 2 pints. problem is there are no leaks


well most likely the transmission fluid needs to be drained and then put in new fluid to the right amount needed, that shall solve your problem. bonus tip also have the clutch stick adjusted if its a manual vehicle.

When cold the auto gearbox does not engage for 5 0r 10 seconds, and disengages when stopping or going round corners it also sometimes sticks in low gear and will not change


1. When was the Transmission Fluid and Filter Replaced. If not recently, have that done as soon as possible. I do not recommend the Super Transmission Flush as this does not replace the Filter.
2. Is there any leaks? What is the Transmission Fluid Level? Check while the Engine is Running and the normal operating temperature has been reached. If the Level correct? Any leaks should be repaired as-soon-as-possible.
3. Input Speed Sensor. Based on 2001 version, this could be fouled or going bad giving the Transmission the wrong information causing erratic shifting. On a 4-Speed Transmission this is located closest to the Solenoid, on the front of the transmission and at the level of the top of the Solenoid. Check the Sensors: Connections, remove, clean the inside end of Sensor, reinstall and check the shifting. If this does not fix: replace this Sensor.

Transmission fluid is leaking from the front of the transaxel above the pan. I know the pan is not leaking. I reached as far as I can and could not feel any fluid from the hose connection. It only leaks...


3 Speed or 4-Speed?
The Transmission Solenoid has a Gasket, which is where it may be coming from. The Solenoid is easy to remove and the Gasket is a one piece, easily to install.
Depending on the type of Transmission:
The Input, Output Speed Sensors; the Neutral Start/Back-up (Safety) Switch; or the PRNDL Switch; are all screwed in. Each may have a rubber o-ring that may be defective causing the leak.
1. Wipe down as much expended fluid as possible.
2. Use a Mechanic Mirror and Flashlight with the engine running to check the culprit!
OR
3. Rollup/Bind-up Paper Towels and wrap it around each individual switch, sensor or at the base of the Solenoid.. Run the engine for a while and pull each towel out individually to check for the fluid. The wet(s) are the culprit(s)
