Question about 1987 BMW 3 Series

1 Answer

We just took our 2001 525i bmw in and had the oil changed, filter changed, spark plugs replaced, alternater belt and a few other belts changed, two power steering lines replaced and a leaky gasket replaced. My husband is now smelling what seems to be oil and just has noticed a small amount of smoke. Could this be from the repairs they did and it just needs to burn off, or could they have missed something and we should take it back in?

Yes TAKE it back in!!!!! This is most likely do to the repair of the leaky gasket. Look at you receipt and find what gasket they replaced. Then look at the area around the gasket. (use a flash light ) You should see oil signs. This is normaly caused by one of three things, 1. They did not tighten the bolts down correctly. Or two they did not clean the remains of the old gasket off, Or 3. They said they replaced the gasket and did not even touch it. Hear is something to think about.... Before you took the car in for repairs did you smell oil?? Is this garage trust worthy?? Did the lady of the house take the car in for the repairs and was told that it needed all these repairs?? In some cases untrust worthy mechanices see a lady come in and see $$$$$$ and tell them that they need all this work done and 99% does not need to be done.

Have your cam seals checked. Cam seals are a big problem on these cars and a major source of oil leaks. Another source is the oil cooler gasket but that doesn't appear to be the issue here as your leaks are well above the oil cooler. Good Luck.

Whats included in a 120k maintance

This almost always if different depending on the shop you take you car to. The best way is to look in your owners manual, pick your diving conditions, normal or extended use, and see what Mistubishi recommends. Should be at least, oil change, rotate, brake inspection, air filter, spark plugs, plug wire set, timing belt. On a Mits with over 100k miles I always recommended Distbutor cap and rotor, Transmission flush(for auto), Induction flush.

100000 mile service checks/replacement parts on a 2000 BMW 528i

If your talking about what would a dealership change, it generally consists of a tune up, including spark plugs, plug wires, air filter, oil change, pcv valve, and fuel filter. Thats also usually when they want to replace the timing belts. There may be one or two other things specific to BMW, but generally thats what you can expect.
