Question about 1998 Jeep Cherokee

2 Answers

My 98 Jeep Cherokee Sport runs great. But sometimes, for no reason at all, when I try to start it it does nothing. No click, no noise, etc. After a few minutes of pressing the gas pedal, brake pedal, and pulling the gear shift back and forth, it usually starts up and runs fine. I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not, I just try anything. It did it again today but it didn't start back up for about 1/2 hour. I don't want to get stranded! Any ideas??

i have a problem starting my 98 jeep cherokee. when i try to start the jeep it wants to start but it seems like its not getting enough gas for some reason, and when it does start up sometimes it dies as soon as i go to drive away. when i am idoling at a stop it sometimes stalls out and if it doesn't i get a slight shake because its idoling way to low, almost to the point of stalling. sometimes when i try to excellerate it seems to almost shut down until i pump the gas and then i just picks up and goes again. i had the alternator check and battery, changed oil, all new plugs, and spark plugs are new. also when i before i forget, when i try to start it up, if i press on the gas it stays on, as long as i keep my foot on the petal.

I also own a 98 xj im pretty sure your problem is your neutrul safety switch on the right side of yuor tranny.when you shift it back and fourth a couple times it will cause the terminals to make contact and allow the jeep to start.mine also does this and sometimes the back up lights dont come on.this switch can be very pricey and the parts store and the dealer wants about 320.00 but online you can get it for around 150.00.you can also take it apart and clean the gunk out of it but beware its really hard to get off the tranny its only aluminum and plastic thats usually breaks.also remember to check the plug because the switch is the same but the connector (right under the hoses for heater core on the firewall) come in 2 different styles.one other thing to is you can search online for the # of pins to test ohms on the connector when your jeep doesnt start.hope this helps!

The check engine light is because all check engine light codes are caused by components that affect emissions. It's not actually an engine problem, it's a problem with either your O2 sensor, MAF sensor, fuel/air ratio, pyrometer, or exhaust.

My jeep td sport does not start at all, the battery shows full voltage , there is no noise of engine ticking over at all, only a slight clicking noise every so often .

if the starter is acessable, hit it with a stick or something (but not too hard to damage it) and then try and see if it works. Sometimes rust and etc builds up in the starter and prevents the plunger from moving and starting the car

1996 Jeep Cherokee Classic, I-6, Automatic Runs great, normally starts great. Occasionally go to start the car and it is totally dead - no dome light, no door buzzer, nothing happens when I turn the key....

first off clean the battery terminals, then follow the ground wire to the body and engine ensure they have good connections. sometimes the wire on the back of the engine that goes to the body breaks. good luck

1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport Ignition Lights Come on but wont crank

Try putting the car in neutral and starting. If its a manual trans it might be the clutch pedal safety switch or it may be something as simple as a loose battery connection.

Having trouble keeping my 98 jeep grand cherokee running

i recommend cleaning the throttle plates. they are located unter the intake hose form the engine to the air filter housing. if you open them with the engine not runniong you will see they will be covered in carbon. use a good carb cleaner and a rag to wipe them clean
