I have the same problem with mine several times you have to pull the steering off and the spring loaded plate behind the wheel then set back in the column there are 3 torx type fine thread screws you have to tighten and this will take care of the side to side of the tilt wheel if not tightened properly you will have to repeat this procedure again and again good luck

sorry but this problem can be fixed if you know what your doing it is quite common with tilt wheels and no you don't need a new column

You need a new steering column,,,,go to a salvage and get one with a key but there is no fixing the old one,,,a used one should run about 75.00 and is not hard to put in

This can be found in the Hanes repair manual that you can get at any auto parts store, Auto Zone, step by step with photos. Not a hard job but you will new a steering wheel puller to get the lock ring out and the wheel off.

Loose Tilt Steering. Steering wheel moves side-to-side and up and down.

You need to remove the steering wheel all the way down to the directional switch to gain access to tighten up the tilt housing set screws

My steering wheel has lots of play up and down , side to side i removed steering wheel i'm stuck on how to get the rest apart to tighten bolts in steering column

you're best to remove the entire column and do it in the bench, if you can get a diagram it will help a lot, assembilng a steering column is tricky, some parts are spring loaded and others only assemble in in the proper order, you got the steering column out, now you will need a tool to depress the lock plate, remove the c clip and the plate, then remove the signal arm and fourway button, remove the signal switch plate remember how everything came out,you should be able to remove the steerin shafe and get at the four bolts holding the tilt mechanism, four reverse torx bolts, reassemble and install, good luck

While driving down the road my 88 chevy 1500 wants to swerve to the left and then to the right. I had the wheels balanced, and have put new shocks on the front. Any ideas?

Check ball joints and tie rod ends for play. Jack the truck up on the frame and try to move the wheel up and down for ball joints and side ti side for tie rod ends. Also make sure you check the idler arm on passenger side and pitman arm on steering box. None of the parts should any play whatsoever. If there is any play in them when you try to move them then replace them.
There could also be excessive play in the steering box but that shouldn't make it swerve back and forth. That would just let it wander to one side or the other until you corrected it by turning the wheel. Hope this helps.
