check coolant level when cold, also make sure coolimg fans are working. if not any of these. check for a bad thermostat or it needs a good flushing out.

How can tell which lower motor mount is bad on my 2004 chevy impala 3.4 liter ? Does a bad motor mount make the engine have grinding noises after running the car?

With the park brake on, start the engine with the hood open so you can see it through the windshield. Put it in reverse and give it some gas, if the engine moves up, you have a broken mount. Do the same in drive. If the motor moves up then the mount on the side of the engine that moved up is broken. If these tests don't show a broken mount then your grinding noise is coming from elsewhere.

I have an 04 hyundai elantra. When im driving slow (0-40mph) you can hear a grinding noise coming from the front driver side, but when i speed up on the highway or anything there is no more noise. it

This could be the brake pads dragging or it could be a wheel bearing. You can check one or the other. The wheel bearing is tested by jacking up the car with that wheel off the ground and see if you can rock the wheel side to side or up and down. The way to check the brakes is to take the wheel off and look at the brake pads.

I have a 2004 MDX and its making grinding noise at 40mph and 60mph. Local auto repair shop say its catalyic converter. Does anyone have answer to the noise.

i have personally never heard of a grinding catalytic. also, these vehicles are not known for cat failures (not to say it can't happen). my first suspicion would be a faulty wheel bearings or lumpy tire. next time you are driving, try swerving the car side to side and listen for if the tone of the noise slightly changes. if so, you can bet you have a bad bearing. i would get a second opinion on the noise, the best way to check and isolate a bearing noise is to put the car on a hoist and accelerate to the speed of the noise, with someone underneath using a stethescope probe to isolate the source of the noise. if the noise goes away on the hoist, you can bet its a tire noise. good luck!

Grinding front passenger wheel when turning right

grinding on front wheel is caused by 2 things. a bad or loose wheel bearing,or worn out brakes, have them both checked You might also want to check the level of fluid in the power steering reservoir - low or lack of fluid will also cause a noise (although more of a whining than a grinding).
This can also be caused by worn or damaged central velocity joints if the vehicle is front wheel or four wheel drive.

Whenever i turn the steering on my 04 Impala, car makes a loud, grinding noise. Took car to shop, and they want $1200 to replace power steering. Is this for real?

I don't know about the price quoted, but it definitely sounds like a faulty power steering unit that needs to be replaced.
I expect there is no cheap fix option available.

04 cavalier makes grinding noise in front end turn the wheel to the right grinding gets worse turn the wheel to the left grinding stops. it sounds worse at 40mph and above. what would cause this?

3 things to check:
Worn disc brake pads, grinding against the rotor.
Wheel bearing
cv joint.
You posted grinding gets worse turning to the right, the problem is the driver side wheel, but it would be best to have both wheeles checked.

Car noise: loud grinding/pinging. Louder when accelerating up to 40mph. Not as bad when idling/over 40mph

Could be anything from a bad knock sensor to an internal engine problem. Try a stethoscope test if you can duplicate this racket while in park.....accordianman
