Hydrochloric acid, known as muriatic acid. The 20% concentrate is available in nearly any hardware store. You can leave your tools in it until the rust is broken down and dissolves.Use this in a well ventilated area as the stench can be quite bad. Also use rubber gloves and wash hands thoroughly afterwards.Wear eye protection too in case of splashes.
Once the tools are done soaking, remove and dry them, then lightly cover them in an oil or WD-40. Any moving tools such as ratchets may have to be stripped and cleaned before lubrication with grease.

If you are replacing the entire unit, often best to cut rusty bolts and replace them. If replacing just the guts, requires special tools to set gear clearance and backlash. Farm this out unless you plan to do this type of work often enough to justify purchase of tools.

Spar plug is rusty

The best solution is to replace the spark plugs as a rusty plug can cause a lot of issues on a long drive even if you can clean and set.

Try cleaning the mass air flow sensor . Don't know what kind of mechanic you take it to , but i would try another one . Hooking up a scan tool an viewing engine sensor data while it's acting up , seeing which sensor is bad is the best way to find fix.

The fuel pump and membrane etc. are shot. Also the fuel tank shows corrosion of rust and gunk. My mechanic says it would be cheaper to clean out the old tank rather than replace it with one i found at a...

If you have a rusty old tank, it will always be a rusty old tank. If you can find a nice tank at the junk yard great, but I would always replace the used pump and strainer no matter what. It is not an impossible job if you have the proper tools. The problem you may run into is if the fuel lines are rusted they are impossible to disconnect not to metion if the fuel tank straps are rusted where they bolt on you may not be able to get the bolts out. This vehicle is no spring chicken and you could run into a real mess. I personally hate these jobs. Do not apply heat or an open flame anywhere near the lines or tank as it can cause an explosion or an uncontrollable fire.

Take a heater hose off and start it up, it should push it out, a lot, like 10psi pressure. Is the cooling system clean? not rusty?Does the heater blow hot air when the engine is hot, if so thats good. when the cooling fan comes on, is the air coming through the radiator hot...it should be. if not, the radiator may be stopped up. if the top and lower hoses are hot, but the air coming through the radiator is cool, the radiator is plugged, and will need to be taken apart and cleaned by a radiator shop, or better yet, replaced.

Chrome wheels are dirty and rusty what is best and easiest way to clean them

Basically, once the chrome is gone it's gone and the metal beneath will begin to rust. You will never restore that chromed look and can only clean the dirt with DAWN dishwashing detergent with grease cutter. Good luck.

Does the engine temperature climb too high? She may need the radiator core blown out with compressed air from the inside to get rid of the bugs and other debris. Does the anti-freeze look clean or rusty? Flush and clean the system if it looks rusty--fill with fresh 50/50 water/anti-freeze. Check the action of the cooling fan(s). They should turn freely by hand when cold. Check the fuel pump pressure and replace the fuel filter. Does the check engine light come on? The O2 sensor(s) may be getting tired. Replace if a lot of miles on it (them).

  • Using seal removal tool 1175-AC or equivalent remove and discard the grease seal. Remove the inner bearing cone and roller assembly from the hub.
  • Clean the inner and outer bearing assemblies in solvent. Inspect the bearings and the cones for wear and damage. Replace defective parts, as required.

  • If the cups are worn or damaged, remove them with front hub remover tool T81P-1104-C and tool T77F-1102-A or equivalent.
  • Wipe the old grease from the spindle. Check the spindle for excessive wear or damage. Replace defective parts, as required.

To install:

  1. If the inner and outer cups were removed, use bearing driver handle tool T80-4000-W or equivalent and replace the cups. Be sure to seat the cups properly in the hub.
  2. Use a bearing packer tool and properly repack the wheel bearings with the proper grade and type grease. If a bearing packer is not available work as much of the grease as possible between the rollers and cages. Also, grease the cone surfaces.

  • Position the inner bearing cone and roller assembly in the inner cup. A light film of grease should be included between the lips of the new grease retainer (seal).
  • Install the retainer using the proper installer tool. Be sure that the retainer is properly seated
