Toyota Prado 2009 diesel intermittently stalls when idlying once heated up

2009 Prado diesel(auto) running fine but in past month problem of intermittent stalling when idlying. Only occurs intermittently and after a reasonable run and engine is heated up - pull up at lights and whilst idlying will simply stall. Vehicle will restart without fuss and then drives ok for days/week before the problem recurs under the same circumstances described. Fuel filters and accelerator pedal replaced but problem remains?? Nothing evident when dealer uses diagnostic equipment on vehicle and unfortunately the problem has not occured when they road test with diagnostic equipment?? A sensor or something?? Going around in circles and driving me crazy!!

John, I have the exact same problem with a 2008 prado diesel. Please can you tell me if you have found the problem, was it the fuel pump?

SOUNDS LIKE THE FIRST STAGES OF AN ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP FAILING. THEY ARE NOTORIOUS FOR THESE TYPES OF SYMPTOMS. THE LOW PRESSURE AT THE TRAFFIC LIGHT RESULTS IN THE STALL, BUT AS LONG AS ITS UNDER DEMAND IT WILL FUNCTION OK UNTIL IT QQUITS. HAVE A PRESSURE CHECK DONE ON THE FUEL PUMP

My 2009 Prado has been doing the same thing, under load it is ok, but as soon as you back off, the engine cuts out. I've taken it back to toyota but because their is not fault code showing they say they cannot find the problem. This problem has got worse so we took it back to toyota and a fault code was showing a fuel issue (dropping in pressure) but now they say that the drop in feul pressure won't cause the car to do what it is doing, but from the research I've done this is the problem. I've told them that I will not except the car back because it's unsafe to drive, they are not impressed but the last time it stalled my wife was on the freeway in the right hand lane doing 110kms with all my kids in it, she was lucky this time and I refuse to except the car back until they fix the problem. I'd like to here more on this, It's starting to do my head in

SOURCE: My vehicle runs well on high speeds. But,

I think your looking at a fuel line problem. I'd check the filter first if you have an inline filter on your car. If thats not it, check filter on fuel pump and fuel pump is operating as it is supposed to. sounds like you probably have a partial blockage in your line and when the fuel it flowing faster it doesn't effect it as much. I'm thinking fuel filter and you probably have 1 inline on that vehicle.

Toyota Prado 2009 the fuel system warning light came on, the system has only had Caltex diesel through it, the filter was changed 15.000 K a go. I fix the problem?

the fuel system light could be low fuel level, vent problem or water in the fuel from condensation in the tank

What could cause a 2003 prado diesel blowing ig1 no2 fuse intermittantly?

My suspicion is a faulty relay, but it's just a hunch because of how it's behaving. I assume that once it's running if you put a fuse in it doesn't blow?
Find the relay for the aircon as that's the most likely candidate and remove it, see if it still happens. If it does not cure it you will have to try to isolate each circuit supplied by that fuse one at a time.
Whatever is causing the surge is only happening when the circuit is energised or de-energised by the ignition, but presumably everything is working OK?

Please make sure earth/ground points are tight and free of dirt and corrosion. especially knowing this is off road car. fuses are clean. charge relay is working correctly, main fuse CONNECTIONS are good. the fact that it happens when you move , means most likely a loose connection.

Make sure you have genuine filters. Mine was doing exactly the same thing after a service - had a non genuine filter fitted - as soon as the genuine one went back on hasn't done it since...

It sounds like the turbo has gone out. That will make a diesel sluggish and burn oil out the turbo. replace the turbo and it should be fine
