Reset the computer and then check your EGR valve. Go to Aboutautomobile.com and look up consumer complaints. The code is different for the EGR, but if the ports are clogged it may affect the Catalytics.

The code is indicating bank 2 Catalytic efficiency is bad. Check out that bank. Some of the O2 sensors have vent tubes built into the connections for cooling. On these types, just hanging new wire to the O2 will not provide the venting. If the connection is bad, then the information may not get to the ECM from the new sensor.

With the problems people are having with the EGR, the ports may be restricted and although the EGR is opening, not much is flowing and it may be giving you a false 430 problem further down the exhaust system.

SOURCE: installed 02 sensor 2 bank

Let's see if I got this right. The vehicle can't be driven because of legal issues with the emissions test, and it has to be driven 200 miles before it can be tested. Talk about your catch 22. Jack that thing up, put it on jack stands, fire it up, put it in gear, and watch the miles add up.

I have 96 buick code p0420.I have replaced the converter and both 02 sensors.mil came back on code p0420. do not know what to do next, help.

fault code that is set when the Onboard Diagnostic II (OBD II) system sees a drop in converter efficiency. The OBD II system monitors catalyst efficiency by comparing the switching activity of the upstream and downstream oxygen sensors in the exhaust. The upstream O2 sensor in the exhaust manifold reflects the condition of the exhaust gases as they exit the engine. The downstream O2 sensor in or behind the catalytic converter reflects the condition of the exhaust after it passes through he converter.

Code p431 and p421

P421=Warm up catalyst system efficiency below threshold, bank 1
P431=Warm up catalyst system efficiency below threshold, bank 2
Sounds like you may have clogged or damaged catalyst converters or bad 02 sensors.
Those codes I think are taking from after the catalyst by the sensors in the exhaust pipes. Be careful taking it to a mechanic for further checking since the catalyst converters are not cheap through them. If you need to replace the converters, shop around and get prices on aftermarket parts. Don't be ripped off by a hungry mechanic or especially a dealer.

Iput a new alarm sistem on my 2005 odyssey and chek engine light came on, code p 0420

P0420 = catalyst efficiency below threshold (bank 1)

I think it is a coincidence that the check engine light came on with this code at the same time as you installed the new alarm.

the power train control module or computer checks the output of the oxygen sensors (pre-catalyst and post-catalyst) and compares them. When the post-catalyst sensor output starts to resemble the pre-catalyst sensor output with little difference, the computer sets the catalyst efficiency code. Check the output of the oxygen sensors. A worn out or lazy oxygen sensor might be at fault. If the sensors check okay, then the catalytic converter may need to be replaced. This is unusual for a 2005 unless the engine has been having misfires. Raw unburned fuel will quickly destroy a catalytic converter.

1-air leak in exhaust before rear 02 sensor, 3-Fuel system fault,
4-faulty catalytic converter.

Check engine light on PO420 code ? recalls

Huge problems with these cars. The Pre-cat converter is built into the exhaust manifold. Expensive to replace. No Recall on this item. Some say that inferior compounds in the catalyst cause corrosion and early wear of the piston rings. I have seen one of these use 5 qts of oil in 300 miles. Is this car using excess oil?
