Question about 1987 Chevrolet Suburban

Check engine light on but no codes

In my 1987 Suburban with a 454 and EFI the check engine light comes on once in a while. It always seems to be when I'm climbing a mild grade and only after a long time on the road, at least 30 minutes. I suspect some sort of EGR thing because it's at mid-throttle/moderate acceleration and hot that it seems to happen. I've checked all the wiring around the EGR and it seems OK. The real annoyance is it never leaves a code in the ECM. Next time I start it, even right after it happens, the light is off. I really don't want just start blindly throwing parts at it.

Sounds like a sticking throttle/throttle cable - what is the IAC reading with engine off and ignition on? Make sure the throttle valve is completely closed when starting the engine. Even though a new TPS sensor, you should carefully check TPS readings as you gradually open the throttle with engine not running - any uneven increase in the readings can cause the problem.

The check engine light will come on when the ECM detects knock, it will only stay on if excessive knock is detected. I would replace the fuel filter and check your fuel pressure.
Could also be a bad knock sensor as the ECM will also advance the timing to make the engine knock. If on knock is detected when the ECM is doing this it will light the check engine light.

SOURCE: Code P2158/ Throttle Body

You most likley need to replace the whole unit. But without diagnosing it its all a guess. Look at it this way. You would of already spent a couple hundred at least to place one small part. If your wrong your now going to have to spend about $500 for the whole unit plus anothe diag possibly.

Can anyone tell me what this is on my suburban?

That is the ODB11 Code Reader Port. When your engine malfunction light comes on, you attach a code reader to that socket and the machine give a P Code. That code tells the problem as stated from the ECM (engine control module.

When cold my '93 suburban dies but once warm runs fine it has a 454 with tbi

Have you checked to be sure the idle air control is working properly and also the engine temp control sw. The iac only comes on to maintain the idle when the engine is cold. The ect sw monitors the outside temp and tells the computer how much fuel to put to the engine. Hope this helps.

95 Chevy suburban, check engine light will come on

First thing you need to do is get the fault code read. Autozone, etc will read them for free. Once you have a fault code, come back and ask a more specific question with your fault code. We need more information to give better responses. The more specific you are, the better chance of success. Which gears will shift, Which won't, what speeds, etc.

"Distributor issue"??? Thats very vague.
Go here,
extreme-check-engine-light-codes.com
and there should be an explaination on how to get the codes yourself. Or get the exact code or codes from Goodrich and come back here and let me know what it is.
Most auto parts stores will check for codes for free. They may or may not do pre OBD II cars. Worth a try.

I would start by checking fuel lines starting from the tank and working my way to the fuel inlet/fuel rail. If no leaks found then you may have an electrical problem of some sort that is causing severe flooding. Is the check engine light on? If it is you may try to read any codes that are present and then list them here for further help and information depending on the codes. To retreive the codes use the diagram I am going to post, cross A and B with a paper clip and turn the key into the on/not cranking posistion. 170934_aldl_2.jpg

96 Suburban v8/7.4L/454 K2500, Knocking Noise??

sound like an internal engine problem. either one or more of the pistons has "piston slap" and that knocking will diminish as the engine warms up or possibly a rod bearing is worn out. have a tech do a manual oil pressure test to make sure the oil pump and main bearings are ok. piston slap or knock that decreases when the engine warms up is not that serious, but a rod bearing knock or possible oil pump failure should be taken care of asap.

EFI underhood relay

I would replace the relay that gets hot, and make VERY SURE that the relay pins fit real tight in the female receivers for the relay. A *** slight *** amount of clearance at the connection will arc & def heat up the relay. Once relays get really, really hot, it, at times, they may no longer be reliable.
