SOURCE: 1995 crown vic gear problems/gear shift wont lock

most likely the shift tube bushings are bad- you may have also lost a few screws in the shift tube or they could just be loose. you have to pull the steernig column down to inspect/repair it.

Make sure you have brake lamps. The shift interlock solenoid is powered by the brake lamp switch.

SOURCE: need location of shift sensor on ford explorer

The Solenoid Pack in trans may be clogged up,now you got coolant in there. You flushed the trans I assume and could replace the solenoid control pack, but it will cost you 332.00 wholesale at trans supply house. After that it is out with trans and new clutches. How long did you drive not knowing you had coolant in the trans?

When cold wont go into foward gears a little throttle slams it in then shifts fine

Start of a failing trans or just dirty valve body or solenoids,
inside the oil pan

Keep up what your doing with the slamming & it will be junk in a couple weeks

Park it & resolve any trans issues

My 98 ford mustang is stuck in park

check fuses for brake shift solenoid. the brake pedal position switch is a fuse under the hood. inside the passenger compartment, check every fuse. that's a start for not having more information.

You maybe low on clutch fluid. (possible leak)
Check fluid level, if low add more and pump the clutch.

98 ford explorer will drive but you put in in reverse will not go

It is possible that the shift linkage is out of adjustment and is going into neutral and not making it to Reverse, try moving the gear selector slowly from park, through reverse to Neutral, and see if it will go into reverse somwhere in between. If this does not work ,you may have Reverse gear failure, a common problem with explorer/ranger transmissions. unfortunatly it requires rebuilding the transmission
