Antifreeze getting into throttle body

The 3.8 liter for this year has a plastic intake manifold. These manifolds are known to fail around the EGR port. When this happens coolant will leak into the intake right behind the throttle body. Dorman makes a replacement upper plenum that has been reinforced in this problem as along with a new gasket and an updated EGR tube. This will more than likely solve your issue. If you see a little coolant behind the throttle body this repair needs to be done ASAP. If this area completely ruptures it will hydroloc the engine. This means that coolant will fill one or more of the cylinders and the engine will not turn over/start.

L300 Saturn 2003 trying to replace my throtter sensor. Can't figure out where to start from. Have no idea where's it located.


Your vehicle has electronic throttle control an the Throttle position sensor's are internal to the throttle body assembly ! Your vehicle has two throttle position sensors .
Throttle Body Assembly
The throttle assembly contains the following components:
?€¢ The throttle blade ?€¢ The throttle actuator motor ?€¢ The throttle position (TP) sensor 1 and 2 You have to replace the Throttle Body Assembly !
Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the inlet hose assembly from the throttle body. Disconnect the throttle body electrical connection. Disconnect the hose clamps from the plenum-to-runner connector using theJ 43914 .
Remove the intake plenum bolts. Remove the EGR passage bolt. Rotate the plenum up and remove the throttle body coolant hoses, EVAP hose, and vacuum line from the throttle body.
Remove the throttle body nuts. Remove the throttle body.

I have a 2005 pontiac gxp that has been using oil and antifreeze but I checked the antifreeze and there are no signs of oil and also the oil dipstick has no antifreeze on it either.....I used about 3...


If you have the V-8 Engine, just totally disregard this post.

If you have the 3.8L V-6 engine, your oil consumption problem is most likely to be caused by the PCV Valve if you cannot find any external leaks. These are also known for the upper intake plenum leaking antifreeze. The ports in the manifold that go to the throttle body are made of very thin plastic. The EGR tube, with its hot exhaust gasses, goes right between them. This causes the plastic to heat up and crack, causing an antifreeze leak that goes directly into the intake and gets burned in the combustion chambers.

DORMAN makes a replacement upper plenum kit to fix this problem. The kit includes the upper plenum with thicker coolant passage walls, an intake manifold gasket set, a smaller-diameter EGR orifice, and a new PCV Valve. This kit will probably fix BOTH of your problems.

You didn't post the size of your engine so please pick the appropriate one:

3.8L
  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
    1. Remove or disconnect the following:
    2. Negative battery cable
    • Supercharger
    • Thermostat housing
    • Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) tube at the intake manifold
    • Engine Control Temperature (ECT) sensor
    • Intake manifold
  • To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:
      • Intake manifold with new gaskets. Torque the bolts, working from the center out, to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
      • ECT sensor connector
      • EGR tube to the intake manifold
      • Thermostat housing
      • Supercharger
      • Negative battery cable
    2. Refill and bleed the cooling system.
    3. Run the engine and check for leaks and proper engine operation.
    4.6L
    4.6L Engine
    1. Remove the brake booster hose from the throttle body.
    2. Remove the fuel pressure regulator vacuum tube from the fuel pressure regulator and the water crossover.
    3. Remove the PCV fresh air feed tube from the camshaft cover and the throttle body.
    4. Remove the PCV dirty air tube from the PCV orifice in the right camshaft cover and from the intake manifold.
    5. Disconnect the fuel injector electrical connectors from the fuel injectors.
    6. Remove the fuel injector wiring harness.
    7. Remove the fuel rail bracket nut from the engine lift bracket.
    8. Remove the fuel rail studs.
    9. Lift and remove the fuel rail with injectors.
    10. Loosen the plenum duct clamp in order to remove the intake manifold.
    11. Remove the intake manifold bolts.
    12. Remove the intake manifold.

    To install:

    1. Install the intake manifold, fitting the plenum duct over the intake manifold duct.
    2. Loosely install the intake manifold bolts.

    Intake manifold torque sequence-4.6L engine


    1. Tighten the intake manifold bolts in sequence. Tighten the intake manifold bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    2. Tighten the plenum duct clamp to the intake manifold. Tighten the plenum duct clamp to 24 inch lbs. (2.75 Nm).
    3. Inspect the fuel injector O-rings. Ensure the fuel injector O-rings are not missing, misaligned or damaged. Replace the O-rings if necessary.
    4. Lubricate the intake manifold fuel injector bores with light mineral oil (GM P/N 9981704), clean engine oil, or equivalent.
    5. Install the fuel rail with fuel injectors as an assembly.
    6. Install the fuel rail studs. Tighten the fuel rail studs to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
    7. Install the fuel rail bracket nut to the engine lift bracket. Tighten the fuel rail bracket nut to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    8. Install the fuel injector wiring harness.
    9. Connect the fuel injector electrical connectors to the fuel injectors.
    10. Install the PCV dirty air tube to the PCV orifice in the right camshaft cover and to the intake manifold.
    11. Install the PCV fresh air feed tube to the camshaft cover and the water crossover.
    12. Install the fuel pressure regulator vacuum tube to the fuel pressure regulator and the throttle body.
    13. Install the brake booster hose to the throttle body.

      Intake manifold using new manifold gaskets. Torque the bolts in sequence to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm); then, re-torque to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm). EGR valve outlet pipe Drive belt tensioner assembly. Torque the tensioner bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Electrical connector to the ECT sensor Thermostat housing Upper intake plenum. Torque the intake plenum bolts to 88 inch. lbs. (10 Nm). Throttle body support bracket Throttle cable bracket to the cylinder head mounting bracket and the cables to the throttle body lever EGR heat shield Fuel rail.     Leaking anti freeze from under the air intake hose under tps sensor right where the plenum and upper intake meet it appears


    The plastic intake upper plenum is known to warp,causing this leak.I believe too much heat from the nearby EGR port.the solution is more than just a new gasket, an upper intake is usually required.there are aftermarket suppliers,which could save you some money on parts.be sure to check around...good luck

    1999 Oldsmobile Eighty Eight has multiple misfires with pistons. What could be the problem?


    check your plenum its probably your problem. Its the plastic intake on top of the motor. This part over heats causing holes in it near the egr which causes antifreeze to pour into your exhaust and making it look like you blew a head gasket, and also allows your spark plugs get wet causing the miss fire. To check take the throttle body off and see if there is antifreeze sitting on top off the motor you'll need a flash light. I had the same problem You can check out info on the internet about this famous problem gm had. If you know how to work on cars its easy to do it yourself. The part cost about 200 or more

    Does anyone have engine schematics for a 2003 pontiac 3.1 V6? Or know of a site where I can find engine schematics? I have to replace an EGR Valve but don't know where it is located.


    If you don't know where the EGR Valve is located, it is safe to assume that you did not properly diagnose your EGR system...how do you know the valve needs replacing?

    If you are trying to fix a trouble code P0401 " Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Insufficient Flow" (This is a very common code with 3.1L GM Engines)
    An EGR Valve replacement will most likely make you about $125 poorer than you were before and will not fix the problem.

    Your EGR port into the intake manifold is most likely clogged up and needs to be cleaned out.

    You will need a Throttle Body Gasket, an EGR Gasket, a can of ThrottleBody and Intake Cleaner, and a little antifreeze. (You will lose just a little when you remove the throttle body.)

    Remove the EGR Valve and the Throttle Body. Use a screw driver or pick to chip out the carbon buildup in the EGR port going into the intake manifold. You will probably have to work it from the intake side as well as the EGR side to get as much of the black carbon out as possible. Be careful not to let this stuff go down into the intake plenum - you will burn some valves if it gets in there. Then use the Throttle Body and Intake cleaner to finish the cleanup. (It helps to take a rag and stuff it into the intake manifold just past the EGR port to catch the gunk so it doesn't go down into the plenum...just don't forget to remove the rag before putting the Throttle Body back on)

    Put everything back together and top-off your antifreeze and clear your computer codes. That should fix it.

    How do u change the 3 spark plugs that are right against the firewall?


    Here's how I do it: -Pull the coils out on the front bank and change those first 'cause they're easy.
    -Remove air box top and intake tube from throttle body as a unit by removing 10mm bolts in air box and 10mm clamp on throttle body (unplug MAF sensor too)
    -Unbolt brackets from rear of upper intake (one of them actually has to come off...the one on the left, I think...). 
    -Unplug all the assorted gizmo's on the plenum, and the wiper motor plug (it's sort of in the way...). The connectors are all different so there's no worry about mixing them up...
    -Unbolt all of the visible 10mm bolts on top of the intake plenum that hold on ground wires and cable brackets, etc.
    -Undo the plenum bolts (12mm), keeping care not to lose the lock washers from the two nuts on either end (warning, us a rag to cover the intake ports). 
    -As far as I can remember, you should now be able to lift the plenum up and to your right enough to get at the rear plugs. You shouldn't need to remove anything from the throttle body (cable, connectors, coolant lines...). It can be held up with a bungee cord or something. Or perhaps an assistant...
    -After changing plugs, assembly is reverse of removal. You can replace the gasket between the upper and lower intake if you wish, but it's metal and usually in quite good condition. Good luck and hope this helps
