1992 Jeep Cherokee starting problems

Found this in a Yahoo post:

Check to see if you are losing prime pressure from fuel pump.
ASD relay kicks for a few seconds when ignition is turned on and fuel pump primes up pressure to injectors. If you have a leak down from the pump this few seconds is not enough to get enough pressure to build. When engine is turning over, ASD relay latches on and fuel pump runs therefor building enough pressure to injectors on the second start. The fuel rail has a port to hook up fuel pressure tester to test this issue. If this is the issue, check valve in pump is failing.
GOOD LUCK and happy motoring

I have a 1998 isuzu hombre. it keeps throwing 3 engine codes. they are as follows po172-system to rich bank #1..2nd code is po405-egr sensor a low cicuit..and 3rd code po452 evap emission system presure...

The lean condition is usually the result of an O2 sensor fault, or a vacuum leak.
The EGR may be stuck and setting that code, you can remove clean and check wiring connections.
The po452 fault code is related to a low input signal from your EVAP system which is to do with your purge canisiter system...You could have a faulty sensor in this system or again bad wiring...

Troubleshoot these areas, clear all fault codes and see how she runs.

Good luck, i hope this helps.

While idleing the jeep doesn't want to stay running. And at intersectons or pushing on brake and clutch it stalls. Seems like the carbuator is getting too much air. Runs fine when valve is held down...

gas smell indicates rich operation. perhaps your fuel pressure regulator diaphram has torn.

Please see my tip at . These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

It blows black smoke wen i get on it real hard and it also does it wen i let it sit and idle it dies sometimes

Way too rich (pollution, horrible gas mileage and shortening the life of the engine by washing down the oil)...
Check carburettion.
Is this carburetted or injected?

98 jeep grand cherokee black smoke

Either your too rich and gas is getting by the piston rings going into the crankcase(oil pan)or you have a defective fuel pump (even if it is new!!)IT'S one or the other!!Running the car very rich for a period of time will have fuel in the oil!! I run mind rich for the nos and smell gas in the oil when draining it and only have a few passes on the motor with the nitrous, but runs extremely rich at idle because the timing is backed way down and running a colder plug causes a rich condition!! Plugs will foul quickly also!!

Troubleshooting fuel system for 1975 jeep cj5

Fuel pumps just supply fuel to the carb. Either they work or don't work. I would make sure that the mixture screws on the carb are set properly. Turn the screws in to lean out the mixture, do one at a time.
You want to turn the screws in to the point where the jeep will start to idle rough and then back out a 1/2 turn. Check your timing also. If the jeep has alot of miles on it, the timing chain will stretch and it's possible that you cannot get the correct timing.
