1988 chevy scottsdale truck shutting off

Ok my truck is an 88 chevy scottsdale and it has a 4.3 v6 it is fourwheel drive and im having problems with it shutting off randomly mainly at a low idle i have replaced alot of stuff on it including spark module, throttle position sensor and a coil and everything else in the firing system minus a new distributor. but it shuts off mainly at low speed or idle and i have no idea what is causing it because the timing is set right and i have jus changed all these parts could someone possibly tell me what is wrong?

I had an identical problem with my 88 Scottsdale. After a week of head scratching by my local dealer, and $1000. worth of shop diagnostic time, they found a bad distributor shaft. Apparently, there is some sort of star wheel on the end of the shaft which has lost magnetism. Replace the shaft.

Is the rear end on a 1988 Chevy Scottsdale the same one as used on a 1982 GMC Sierra? Our 82 is leaking and we are not flush atm, but the 88 is down for the count so can be ravaged for parts

Not at all the same the 82 rear diff is either a true 10 bolt gm, or a 12 bolt gm diff these were a lot stronger and standard size diffs made from stronger strength castings and materials also the spring perches were further inboard than the later models due to the frame being much narrower than the 88 the 88 rear diff can be installed but the mounts will need to be moved also the 88 diff is a metric design so lugs, brake lines ,brakes will all be different threads and will give a hassle converting the standard size lines on the 82 over to metric for it to work

Will a 1988 chevy scottsdale transmission enterchange with earlier model transmissions like 1983 or 1984 with 350 or 305 engines

Three different transmissions could be in either the 88 or the 83 or84. The 4 speed auto 700r4, the 9 inch tail t-350, or the 9 inch tail t-375. as long as it is the same type transmission, they will interchange. The 4 speed 700r4 has some internal internal differences between the years, but will still work. The 350 or 375 trannys are identical from that year range.

4x4 doesnt work

I have a 1988 chevy 4x4 that hat the same problem. It was the 4wheel drive switch(works like a selenoid) and screws into the front differential. I was told they go out often although I have only replaced one. This is a picture of it. It can be purchased at most any auto-parts store. Hope this helps. Larry

Have you tried to replace the IAC (idle air control) valve?

Another probable cause could be a stuck EGR solenoid. If this solenoid sticks open, it will send vaccuum to the EGR valve, which will open the EGR valve and flood the system with too much air and "snuff" the engine out. This problem only shows up at idle. The engine should run fine when driving. Please let me know if this helps.
