the crank position sensor is coming up because the timing is misfiring for number 5 coil. when was the last tune up ,and check the coil rubber boots they somethings get oil on them from a leaking vavle cover. start with pulling out the coil and rubber boot with number. here is my link you can e mail me there if you want. I am a self employed mechanichttps://www.facebook.com/TedsRepairs

the crank shaft position code went off once it was changed it was bad. so do u think that changing the coils will do the trick?

  • kaylie Nov 06, 2012

the 4.6 and 5.4 liter motors are good for oil on the spark plug rubber boot that is hoohed to the coil, and some times the spring in the boot to the coil gets messed up

thats what it sounds like, a bad or clogged up fuel filter. if it bogs down when giving it gas, or going up a hill. its probably the fuel filter not letting enough fuel to engine. that is why it stalls at a stop. if this helps but not fully. check or clean idle air control motor. this is what maintains proper idle of vehicle. have a good day !!

I once owned a trans repair shop-
if your trans fluid was in any way other than
pink, your trans may as well come out
and be rebuilt

You have coil misfires as you know, several shown,
most likely only 1 real bad one.

You have O2 sensor codes as well as MAF

The only issue you have is to find the bad
coil
You can't do that buy the codes you have
You have to walk a new coil till you find the
really bad one or get professional help
Don't count on them getting it right

After the misfire and coil issues are solved
there are other thing that can be looked into

I could fix this for you but that's not an internet
option

I definitely would stay away from a dealer.

Why was the trans let go until the fluid was
black?
Not to be hurtful -but it is a well known fact
for decades, that trans fluid and power steering
fluids get changed every 30,000 miles on ALL
vehicles and never past 3 years.

Wish I could have been there sooner, before you
got it or since.

i HAVE BEEN GETTING THE PO316 CODE FOR THE LAST 3 MONTHS. I HAVE FOUND 7 OTHER LINCOLN AVIATOR OWNERS EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM. BETWEEN THE RANGE OF 40-60 THE TRUCK STUTTERS, STAULS AND RUNS EXTREMELY ROUGH. WE ALL HAVE LAREADY CHANGED THE COILS, COIL PACKS, SPARK PLUGS, FUEL FILTER, THROTTLE SENSOR, CAM SENSOR, CRANK SENSOR AND ARE LEFT WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I HAVE ALSO HAD 3 LOCAL MECHANIC SHOPS RUN 1 HOUR DIAGNOSTICS ON THE TRUCK AS WELL AS A PERSONAL MECHANIC AND THE PO316 MISFIRE CODE IS VERY VAGUE. IF ANYONE HAS A RESOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

Trouble with my rpms

Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

TRY THIS AND LET ME KNOW IF IT CORRECTS YOUR PROBLEM
Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls at stops and low erratic idle speed and rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake

Idle Air Control (IAC) motor is sticking. You can try taking it off and cleaning it but most likely will have to replace it.
