There are no free full diagrams on the net, you need to charge and test the battery, clean the battery cables and run a voltage drop test as well, replace them if the are badly corroded. Kragen will test the battery for free.

the starter is located on the passenger side lower motor. it has two bolts in it that hold it in place. it actually goes through a hole/slot in the transmission to the flex plate.

1st. disconnect the negative cable on the battery.
2nd. raise the vehicle safely and place a jack stand under the vehicle out of your way but near where you will be working(for safety).
3rd. remove the two bolts that hold the starter in place.
4th. remove the wires from the back of the starter.
5th. install in reverse order of above.

note: there may be little plates between the starter and the mounting points called shims. if there are then make sure you put them back.

Sounds like the bendix is stuck in the starter. When this happens, the starter energizes and turns, but the gear does not kick out to make contact with the flywheel. Have someone tap on the starter while cranking the engine.

If your engine is cranking really strong make sure you have proper engine timing. If your engine is having a hard time cranking like its cranking really slow. You probably need to check your battery.

It's when the security light starts flashing that the infamous "chip" in the key becomes a nightmare to many. Gradually the car begins not cranking anymore or if it cranks it would start and die in a second. Randomly it will do this more and more often until it won't start anymore. VATS, PASSkey and Passlock immobilizer systems are killing cars all over North America, they have a short lifespan and are certainly more effective against owners than thieves. Here is how you save your car
1st trick, Try a spare key that is newer or used less. The pins wear down and so do the keys causing security fail. 2nd trick, (if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my regal for more than a year. If its shutting down while running, im sorry i have no quick fix... Cheap fix: Bypass the chip in your key. Temporary, but effective. Until the TDM (theft deterrent module) in the dash poops out, then you're kinda screwed. I was told that these types of key security systems have a 7-10 year life span. Sucks for us. This link explains the "Key Issue" pretty well.

Never worry again fix: Bypass the whole VATS/Passlock/passkey I or passkey II system entirely. Literally take it out, and throw it away. I just did this in my Regal. Took about an hour. Took longer to find the thing than it did to fix the problem. They sell a unit for 200 bucks to totally bypass this system FOREVER. life time-money back and all that. Finally did this in my car. Well worth the 200 if you've looked into getting this replaced... Anywhere from 600-1000 bucks. If you do buy this, please purchase it thru this link. I don't think the anti-theft is the problem.
On GM vehicles, the anti-theft system will not allow the engine to crank, or get fuel or spark. If it cranks, you have a different problem.

98 chevy blazer won't start new fuel pump, new starter, battery good. will not turn over. ignition switch changed. its not getting fire to the starter.


Have you checked the purple wire directly at the starter for power when the key is turned to start? Is the vehicle equipped with any type of remote start or alarm system?

My 1999 volvo s80 won't start. turn the key and nothing happens. there is no clicking, no cranking, nothing. someone suggested that the security system is the problem. we have never intentionally used...


On your year there would be something , like cranking , if the security is set. I would start with checking the fuses and then work my way to the starter relay. then I would go to the starter.

My 1996 nissan quest gxe wont even power solinoid or starter when i turn key.dash lights come on only im positive its the factory security alarm.how can i reset it


this alarm system is reset with the key being turned in the door, lock and unlock the driverside door and then see if it starts if not then do the same to the pass/side and see if it starts if it doesnt then you may have a bad starter, the best thing to do is check for power at the small wire on the starter if theres power to the small wire with the key in the crank postion and there should be power on small wire if there is then replace the starter, hope this helps.

Check your manual if you have it. I believe you need to have the key in the ignition in the ON position for about 10 minutes to reset the security system.

try turning the key over to the start position. then take a long screwdriver and touch it across the terminals on the starter. this should start your vehicle. if the sarter doesnt turn when you do this,then you have the starter locked up,and yo will have to take it off and install some shims under the bolts.if the starter is trying to turn and the lywheel isnt urning...then you have a locked up engine.

My 1999 Chevy Truck 3500 with 5.7 L engine. It has Passlock II. While driving the Security Light came on and stayed on. Later my starter failed so had to disconnect the battery. Now Security Light stays on...


yes you can deactivate the factory alarm system and put in a after market alarm. when you disconnect your battery cable the system may have lost the code. you can have a lock smith check same for you.

First of all make sure all your battery connections are Clean and Tight. If they are and all your dash lights come on and its not starting But its cranking over Your anti theft alarm may have gotten activated. You may have to leave your Key in the On position for 20 minutes to reset the alarm. Not cranking just in the on position, Now if its not Cranking and your hearing a clicking sound it may be your starter. I have sometimes tapped on the stater with a deadblow hammer and had someone crank it over Making sure your in park foot on brake and being EXTREMLY Carefull that you are not going to run someone over.
