Question about 1998 Dodge Neon

1 Answer

1998 Dodge Neon 2.0L SOHC

Yesterday morning, my neon wouldn't start. It would crank over and try to catch but wouldn't start. I've replaced plugs and wires, checked fuel injection system for presure and made sure that I had 12 volts at the battery. When I crank the motor the headlights dont dim, but gauges and idiot lights flicker and bounce. What should I try next? Thanks for the help.

The eng light comes on when the key is turned on, the car has 150,000 km on it and I checked through the oil cap, and I could see the lifters move while it is cranked

pull your cam sproket and check the sproket positioning pin to see if it has snapped or bent.....i just had this problem with my 98 sohc 2.0 dodge neon and after it was replaced the car started rite up.......the motor will turn but not start if the auto shutoff has engaged.......after that your only worry should be if a valve has been hit by a piston as you tried to turn over the motor

1998 dodge neon stalls after awhile wait a little bit then it will start and go for awhile then stalls again.

Not trying to highjack your post. I just bought a 98 neon sport, manual sohc 2.0. Im having the exact same issue i think, car will run for a while then tac drops to zero and it dies, 5-40 minutes later i can restart but i usuall only make it a few blocks and it dies again, wait again and it will restart. Did you solve this problem with your neon and if not can anyone give me more places continue to diagnose. It has new cam and crank sensors, fresh plugs, wires and coil, new battery. I got the car cheap, thinking of fuel savings but i dont want it to became a parts money pit.

if it was the neutral safety switch it more than likely wouldn`t start at all or start when without pushing on the clutch.it sounds more like the linkage could be damaged(think these are cable) or its out of adjustment and needs adjusting.does it feel like its going into gear(like it does when working) but not engaging if so it could be a problem with the transmission.first have the linkage checked out.

1998 dodge neon. Engine tries to start , but won't catch.

The timing belt may not be broken, but is it missing any teeth, sounds like it has jumped timing,i would remove the cover and inspect it real good.

Shake or gentle tug on the wiring harness and try starting the engine! I found that my problem was with the cam sensor wiring harness
