SOURCE: '97 Dodge Dakota 5.2l oil pressure problems

On the 318 (5.2 liter) V-8 that was in my 1973 Dodge Dart Sport, I started having oil pressure problems with valve ticking and clunking around the crankshaft around 173,000 miles. Prior to the problem, I had bought a couple cases of Pennzoil on sale. Needless to say, when I finally dropped the pan, the sludge had baked to a ceramic-like texture. I soaked the pick up screen in solvent to disolve the crud, replaced the oil pump, and replaced the main and rod bearings with undersized bearings (.001" undersized). The oil pressure went up to normal, the valve tick went away, and the clunking on the bottom end went away. The engine felt as tight like new, and should have lasted for another 150,000+ miles if the nitwit I sold it to hadn't wrapped it around a light pole. By the way, don't ever use no-name, Pennzoil or Quaker State motor oil. The minimal savings will cost you in the long run.

How to change oil pump ?

Engine oil pumps rarely fail. When the oil pressure is low, it's usually due to worn bearings. Other causes are possible, but the oil pump is inside the oil pan on the bottom of the engine. Before deciding that it needs to be replaced, the oil pressure should be checked with a pressure test gauge - not the gauge on the vehicle, because that gauge could be inaccurate. In fact, a defective oil pressure sending unit, gauge or wiring is far more likely than oil pump failure. Be sure the oil level is correct. Compare the reading in psi. to the manufacturers specification. Also consider the oil viscosity. Thin oil gives lower pressure than thicker oil (higher numbers like 40) however, thinner oil flows faster. Use the oil recommended. If the oil pump has really failed, bearings and other engine parts may be damaged. If you really do need to replace it: dodge pick up oil pump

My toyota 5a engine tapets are very noisy when running

check your engine oil pressure with a manual gauge, compare it to repair manual specks. if oil pressure is too low and mileage is 80,000 or below you could get by with an oil pump replacement. If miles are lower see if tappets are adjustable and try it. only if oil pressure is good as well. If mileage is higher than 80,000 you may be in the market for an overhaul if oil pressure is low.

What does the oil pressure do

oil pressure is VERY IMPORTANT do not run your engine if you have low or no fuel pressure. most engines run at around 40 psi and you WILL cause engine damage if you are running any lower than about 15-20 psi. to answer your question more directly, oil pressure is ussually generated by a gear driven pump that typically runs off your vehicle cam. once your system is pressurized by the fuel pump oil will flow throughout various oil galleys and oil your crank main bearings, oil rinds around your pistons, cam, lifters, rocker arms, valve springs, ect... if you do not have suffient pressure you motor will not properly lubricate and you will suffer complete engine failure over time

I need to know how to troubleshoot oil pump problems on a 1997 pontiac montana and how difficult it is to change.

You need to remove the oil pressure sender by the oil filter and put a manual gauge in to see what your oil pressure actually is. The oil pump is fairly easy to replace, just drain out the oil and remove the starter. You can get to the oil pan bolts and then lower the pan. The oil pump is held onto the rear main bearing cap by one bolt. Remove it and lower it keeping in mind that the oil pump drive shaft will come out with it. Make sure the shaft hasn't rounded off, if its worn, replace it.

CAN A OIL PRESSURE GO DOWN TO 25 WHILE IN GEAR AND 40 WHILE HITING THE GAS IT SHOLD STAY AT 40 45 NORMALY NO MATER WHAT RIGHT ITS A 2000 DENALI 4X4 I DO HAVE ISSUES WITH 02 SENSORS IS THAT THE REASON WHY

Oil pressure is not constant, while idiling the pressure is less than when accelerating. Usually when the oil pressure gauge fluctuates it is a sign of low oil level.

Can you remove the oil pan to change the oil pump without lifting the engine off the motor mounts? Also, if the pump is not bad, what gear drives the pump in the upper part of the engine and could it be...

No. You have to lift the engine. The distributor has a gear on it. this is what drives the oil pump. Most times 99% the bearings are worn out causing low oil pressure. I have replaced oil pumps, not because they were bad, but because someone wanted a high pressure pump. The first thing I would do if I suspected oil pressure problems is put a mechanical guage on the engine. If the oil pressure is normal then all you need to do is replace the oil sending unit. Of course if you knocking in the lower engine, then it would be bad bearings. Forget the pump. you need to replace the engine

Recently had the oil sending unit replaced, oil pressure is still erratic.

Hi.This will indicate that there may be some sludge build up in the block, or the oil pressure switch is damaged. The more serious issue will be a failing oil pump. To isolate the issue, simply, have a oil pressure test ran on this engine. If the test indicates that the true oil pressure is optimal at idle, kindly replace the oil pressure switch. Now, if the test proves that the pressure is indeed lower than factory specifications, this will confirm that the pump is damaged. Have the pump, and oil pump screen replaced, in this case.

NOTE_ I would, also, recommend to have the engine flushed asap.

Low oil pressure after engine warms up in 94 blazer with 4.3

I have a 99 blazer and ever since I have owned it, it reads lower in pressure when idling, but will go up too 40 while driving. This is normal for the vehicle. If the pressure gets real low, and stays low, it means its time for an oil change.

As long as the pressure goes up when you give it gas, it is fine.

Can oil pressure be regained after a substantial loss due to faulty sending unit? (if oil cahnge don't seem to be enough!)

Your oil pressure can be effected by several things. If you visually look at the sensor with the vehicle running you can usually see the oil coming out of the top of the sensor. Also look at the engine to see where oil is dripping from. Valve cover gaskets, pan gaskets, front and rear oil seals all have a tendency to leak especially the rear seal.
Regarding your oil pressure, if the oil is full then you should have pressure unless the pump is bad. The only other reasons for lower oil pressures are if you ran the engine out of oil and spun a bearing or two. Got the engine hot and caused the oil pressure bypass spring to loose its strength thus lowering the pressure. A plugged oil filter, etc. can lower it also. If you have a newer vehicle, they are built to run at lower oil pressures than older carburated vehicles do. This is the biggest reason that newer vehicles have no oil pressure gage in them. Good Luck, RAC
