Unplug wire connector at wiper motor and test light with switch on, if power to plug most likely wiper motor shot, if no power to plug than its switch.

You will have to take a look at the connecting joints for the wiper mechanism for looseness or missing mounting bolts. Remove the cowell grill cover behind the hood to expose it. If you have the ignition on and the dimister set on auto, spray some water on the sensor (atop rear view mirror base) to get it working and show you where the pop is coming from. It definitely sounds like the armature is not mounted on right or is missing mounting screws.
