SOURCE: Power steering pump replacement for Subaru Outback

REMOVAL

  1. Remove ground terminal from battery.
  2. Remove pulley belt cover bracket.



  1. Loosen lock bolt and slider bolt and remove power steering pump drive V-belt.
  2. Disconnect connector from power steering pump switch.



  1. Disconnect pipe C and suction hose from oil pump. CAUTION:
    • Do not allow fluid from the hose end to come into contact with pulley belt.
    • To prevent foreign matter from entering the hose and pipe, cover the open ends of them with a clean cloth.



  1. Remove bolts which install power steering pump bracket.



  1. Place oil pump bracket in a vise, remove two bolts from the front side of oil pump. CAUTION: Do not place oil pump bracket directly in the vise; use soft pads and hold oil pump lightly to protect the pump.



  1. Remove socket from oil pump.
  2. Remove bolt from the rear side of oil pump.

Speedo works intermitently 99 outback legacy


I had to replace my vehicle speed sensor in my 98 Legacy GT. you can unscrew it from the transmission and hook it up to a drill to spin it and it will show the RPM's on the speedo, but it could be the sensor or the speedo head. The sensors are around $120, and having a speedo repaired can be a few hundred at the max. It's most likely the vehicle speed sensor only because that is usually the problem nine times out of ten. I hope this info helps.

Subaru 97 speed sensor trouble code p0500 not passing admissions.. what part to I buy and where is the sensor located?


There are actually two Vehicle Speed Sensors (VSS). I'm going to assume you have a 2.5 liter engine and an automatic transmission.

The Vehicle Speed Sensor 1 (output shaft rotation sensor) is mounted to the extension case (from the outside of the case). The sensor outputs a pulse signal which is transmitted to the TCM where it is converted to vehicle speed.


The transfer clutch drum is connected directly to the rear wheel driving propeller shaft. Vehicle speed sensor 1 on the AWD model detects rear-wheel speed.

Vehicle Speed Sensor 2 provides vehicle road speed information to the ECM. The ECM uses this data to properly determine ignition and fuel delivery curves. The sensor consists of a reed switch and magnetic rotor turned by the speedometer cable.


One rotation of the magnetic rotor opens and closes the reed switch four times, producing a digital signal which is converted to vehicle speed by the ECM. The sensor operates whenever the vehicle is moving with ignition ON. As the transmission rotates, the speed sensor sends a pulsed on/off signal to the ECM.

The speedometer uses VSS 2 for it's signal.

1998 legacy outback. engine light comes on & goes off sporadically, when on, it hesitates at takeoff & runs rough at low speed.


Knock sensor has gone bad most likely. I had the same problem with the same car and replaced the knock sensor. Fixed the problem. Very common with Subarus. It's an inexpensive part but it requires patience and small surgeon's hands to get to it and replace it. Lots of how-to articles on line.

I need to check Vehicle Speed 1 to sort out a speedo problem, but do not know where the 2 wires lead to. This for a Subaru 1997 Outback


I assume you're referring to the Speed Sensor, and the 2 wires coming from the Speed Sensor? Is your speedometer totally inop, or is it giving improper, or sporadic indications? I'm not familiar with Subaru, but wiring for speed sensors are generally the same for most 96 and newer vehicles. That 2-wire harness typically runs to a disconnect... to the PCM... maybe another disconnect... speedometer. If you have access to schematics, or wiring diagrams, you would need to obtain a few plug and pin numbers, locate the components, then trace a few wires. I'd suggest first running a diagnostic in order to obtain any possible fault codes, and use that as a good starting point.

2000 Subaru Outback Wagon (100K miles) with P0420 Code


I do not know for sure if this is the problem you are having, But, I have noticed that from 95 up to 2002 I have seen a lot of PO420 codes that have been just the sensor. I do not know if it was a weak sensor or just that program telling it that it is below threshold. I did notice that if the vehicles are run for a long trip at highway speed it goes out. On my 1998 subaru outback 4wd i have 2 codes that came on p-1540 and p-0500 what do they mean.- .


P1540 VSS(vehicle speed sensor) signal to high, P0500 vehicle speed sensor malfunction.

Uneven acceleration just at the begining when starting forward.


If I am to understand correctly you are referring to the MAF, Mass Air Flow sensor. If so, it is a very simple job without the use of special tools. Disconnect wire connection from sensor. Remove air cleaner assembly From the air intake duct. Remove nut ( 10mm If i remember correctly) and lift from air cleaner. Then just reverse to reassemble. Hope this helps.
