Engine light is on and very heavy on fuel backfiring when pressing accelerator

Engine lite means engine is not running properly, backfire means you have a ignition problem, bad spark plug wires, bad spark plugs heavy on fuel means it is not burning the fuel properly to get good power from it. Check or replace plugs and wires. put some injector cleaner into the fuel tank if it is fuel injected

Car runs fair when you excelarate it backfires and has no get up and go

It sounds like your timing is off or your timing advance. Best take a look at all that, points, and dwell too. It could also be a leak in a hose if you have a vacuum advance.

Check your fuel pressure it should be 30-45 psi. There is a test port on the fuel rail to connect a fuel pressure test gauge.

Why is my Rover 75 burning off oil when heavy exceleration occurs or after a while running at low speed

This is an indication that you have either worn piston rings or worn valve guides.
A compression test on cyclinders will determine if the piston rings are worn out.

Car missing when excelaration pop noise comming from throttle body

pop noise, like it's backfiring? Could be fuel system to rich, timming is off a little, or bad plug wires causing spark to jump to the wrong plug. You need to do some digging to find the correct cause of the problem.

Backfires in manifold on motor on acceleration. runs ok low speeds

Spark plug wires. If you take it in a garage or wait till it's dark, and have somebody brake torque it while you watch, you'll see spark jumping. But don't get run over! Do it in reverse. Or just change the wires.
